The Punic Wars were a series of wars fought over control over Western
Mediterranean trade routes. Gaining control over the Mediterranean allows Roman
culture to expand throughout portions of Africa, Asia, Europe, and the Hellenistic world
of the Eastern Mediterranean.

The Outcome???

Rome defeats Carthage
despite Carthage’s strong
navy; needs to build a
strong navy.
Hannibal attempts to
avenge his father’s death
and invades Italy from the
north after going through
Spain and crossing the
Alps. Hannibal is
defeated at the Battle of
Zama by the Romans.
Carthage loses to the
Romans once again and
the Romans decide to
“finish” them. They plow
salt into their fields and
burn their cities. Rome
officially has control of
Western Mediterranean
trade.
Why was Rome in a good location for trade? Describe the geography of Italy.
