Acute food crisis likely after 50 years: Expert
Staff Correspondent
Eminent water expert Dr Ainun Nishat on Saturday said that Bangladesh will experience acute
food shortage after 50 years if the present trend of climate change continues.
“Due to negative impacts of global climate change, many countries, including Bangladesh, are
witnessing low rainfall, excessive droughts, cyclones and other natural calamities. If this
situation goes on, there will be a sharp fall in food production,” he said while addressing a
memorial lecture titled ‘Climate Change Challenges: Road to Doha and beyond’ at RC Majumdar
auditorium at Dhaka University (DU).
DU history department organised the event in memory of three martyred intellectuals of the
history department - Prof Sontosh Chandra Bhattacharya, Prof Abul Khair and Prof Giasuddin
Ahmed.
Dr Nishat stressed the need for introducing modern agricultural technologies to adapt to the
climate change impact.
Speaking on the occasion, DU Vice Chancellor Prof AAMS Arefin Siddique said Bangladesh
will have to play an important role in tackling climate change impacts as it is the worst victim of
it. Paying tribute to the martyred teachers, he said, “We are now free citizens of independent
Bangladesh due to their supreme sacrifice”
History department Chairman Shireen Hasan Osmany presided over the programme while
Associate Professor Dr Iftekhar Iqbal conducted it.
Family members of three martyred intellectuals were also present on the occasion.
