Special Event on “Food security and genetic diversity”
16 January 2015
Introduction
Ms Maria-Helena Semedo
Deputy Director-General, Natural Resources Coordinator
Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations
Your Excellencies,
Distinguished Guests,
Ladies and Gentlemen,
It is an honour to welcome you at FAO today to our Special Event on
“Food Security and Genetic Diversity”.
I am encouraged by the Commission's tradition to organize, prior to its
Regular Session, special events focused on topical issues in the area of
genetic resources and this time it is on food security and genetic
diversity.
These special event offer an excellent opportunity for commission
delegates to discuss and exchange information.
I am pleased that you will hear today the importance genetic diversity
plays to address food security and nutrition; how food security at
national and international level consider genetic resources and
biodiversity and; how to better contribute to the global goal of a world
without hunger as Genetic resources are key components of
sustainability, resilience and adaptability in production systems.
During this event, we will have additional opportunity to share ideas,
knowledge and experiences on this matter through an informal
discussion.
As all of you are aware, the input intensive agricultural development
model that we have used for the past 40 years has worked well. But it
is unsustainable!!
At the forefront to be impacted is genetic diversity due to loss of
habitats/ species, erosion and chemical pollution among others.
On the other hand, it is important to stress that there is great potential
for agriculture to play a beneficial role in the conservation and
preservation of genetic diversity.
It is therefore time for a paradigm shift.

Ladies and Gentlemen
I wish to recall the Second International Conference on Nutrition held
here at FAO In November 2014. During this successful event
participants endorsed the Rome Declaration on Nutrition that commits
countries to eradicate hunger and prevent all forms of malnutrition
worldwide.
That includes to name a few promoting diversification of crops,
improving intake of micronutrients and enhancing nutrition sensitive
agriculture.
Genetic diversity is additionally a key element in climate change
adaptation and is one of the most promising ways to ensure plants,
animals and micro-organisms enhance capacity to adapt and survive
when their environments change.
Ladies and Gentlemen
We have a clear duty as the links between food security, nutrition and
genetic diversity still need to be better understood.
I encourage this gathering to focus on this history year- 2015. We
have the SDG’s and other important climate change negotiations on
the calendar. Our outcomes could assist to underscore the links
between food security, nutrition and genetic diversity.
I wish you a fruitful discussion as I look forward to the outcome of our
deliberations.
