2016.17 Eighth Grade Advanced Instrumental Music, Quarter 4 Ongoing Standards Big Ideas/Key Concepts: Students will regularly demonstrate proper daily maintenance of their instruments. They will demonstrate understanding of historical connections to the music being performed. Standards Student Friendly “I Can” Statements Proper Instrument Care and Maintenance 8.IM.2.1.2 Demonstrate proper daily maintenance routine. (i.e., corks, slides, valves, reeds, bows, strings). 8.IM.2.1.3 Execute periodic cleaning beyond daily maintenance. Technique 8.IM.2.3.3 Demonstrate knowledge of breathing, bowing, embouchure, fingering, articulation, and/or percussion sticking at an intermediate level. I can clean and maintain the playing condition of my instrument. I can demonstrate proficient technique in Grade III music. Correct posture Proper instrument and hand position Correct breathing, embouchure, bowing, and/or sticking I can demonstrate proficient technique on a variety of auxiliary percussion instruments in performance literature (percussion students only). 8.WCE.IM.1 Demonstrate age-appropriate practice strategies. I can independently develop practice strategies to improve my performance (ex. Playing difficult rhythms slowly, playing out of tune sections with a tuner, etc.) I can independently implement practice strategies to improve my performance. 8.IM.9.1.3 Discuss the basic musical characteristics of selected historical periods. I can describe the musical characteristics of the music being rehearsed in class and what it has in common with other music from the same time period. Students should begin to make broad connections between music and other disciplines. Students will have a high proficiency of technique, demonstrating high school readiness. 2.0 Playing Instruments Characteristic Tone Quality 8.IM.2.2.3 Produce a characteristic tone quality. I can produce a characteristic tone in all registers at a dynamic level of mezzo forte, demonstrating vibrato if my instrument uses vibrato. Technique 8.WCE.IM.11 Demonstrate advancing fingering techniques (e.g. trills, shifting, etc.). I can demonstrate trill fingerings for all notes within the practical range of my instrument. I can demonstrate the shifting of positions for my string instrument. 8.WCE.IM.12 Demonstrate the ability to adjust pitch while playing by listening to other members of the ensemble, regardless of range, dynamics, or orchestration. Pitch and Rhythms 8.IM.2.4.3 I can identify, notate and perform selected Grade 3 rhythms and pitches. Musicality 8.IM.2.5.3 Demonstrate an understanding of phrase shaping. Sight-Reading 8.IM.2.6.3 Apply basic elements associate with successful sightreading using a variety of meters and tempi. Scales and Rudiments 8.IM.2.7.3 Perform eight major scales/eight rudiments. I can play with good intonation at all times. I can play correct pitches and rhythms in Grade III music. I can demonstrate building and tapering phrases on my instrument. I can sight-read 16-24 measures of Grade II music. Winds/Mallets I can play concert D scale and arpeggio one octave. Percussion I can play all flams. 3.0 Improvising 8.IM.3.2.3 Create a variation of a simple melody with a minimum of five pitches and varying rhythms. I can create and perform a variation based on a blues scale pattern. 8.IM.3.3.3 Improvise a solo over a given blues progression. I can improvise a solo over a given blues progression. 6.0 Listening and Analyzing 8.IM.6.1.3 Identify instruments within selected listening examples. 8.IM.6.2.3 Compare and contrast specific musical events in a given example. I can identify the orchestration of a selected listening example (e.g. band arrangement of an orchestral piece). I can identify changes in a musical example (such as rubato). 7.0 Evaluating 8.IM.7.1.3 Analyze the three building blocks of music (melody, harmony and rhythm) and their relationship to the quality of a musical performance. I can evaluate a given musical work for aesthetic qualities using appropriate musical terminology. 8.IM.7.2.2 Construct a written evaluation of one’s own performance using appropriate vocabulary/terminology. I can evaluate and improve personal performance by comparison with an exemplary model using teacher- given parameters. 9.0 Historical and Cultural Relationships 8.IM.9.3.3 Examine and discuss the role of music and its influence in present-day society. I can describe the relationship between music and society using examples like patriotic music helping build civic pride, music at various athletic events motivating athletes and fans, etc. I can explore the historical background of a music composition.
