2016.17 Seventh Grade Intermediate Instrumental Music, Quarter 3 On-Going Standards Big Ideas/Key Concepts: Students will demonstrate regular maintenance of their instruments. They will consistently play with correct basic techniques and begin to develop practice strategies to improve performance. They will demonstrate an understanding of the historical connections to the music being performed. Standards Student Friendly “I Can” Statements Proper Instrument Care and Maintenance 7.IM.2.1.2 Demonstrate proper daily maintenance routine. (i.e., corks, slides, valves, reeds, bows, strings). Technique 7.IM.2.3.2 Demonstrate a fundamental knowledge of breathing, bowing, embouchure, fingering, articulation, and/or percussion sticking. I can clean and maintain the playing condition of my instrument. I can demonstrate proficient technique in Grade II music: Correct posture Proper instrument and hand position Correct breathing, full length bowing, embouchure, fingering, articulation and/or percussion sticking/mallet grip and appropriate auxiliary percussion 7.WCE.IM.1 Demonstrate practice strategies as guided by the teacher. Students should be working to present a performance. Students will begin to make connections between performance music and society. 1.0 Singing 7.IM.1.2.2 Sing a basic two-part harmonization with both parts using the same rhythm. I can sing my part in a two-part harmonization where both parts have the same rhythm. 2.0 Playing Instruments Characteristic Tone Quality 7.IM.2.2.1 Produce a fundamental tone throughout range of the instrument. I can produce a characteristic tone throughout the intermediate level range of my instrument. Technique 7.WCE.IM.5 Adjust intonation while performing with others. I can adjust my intonation to others when performing. 7.WCE.IM.6 Demonstrate appropriate bow distribution. I can play with specific bow distribution at the balance point. Pitch and Rhythms 7.IM.2.4.3 Identify, notate and perform selected intermediate level (grade II) rhythms and pitches. I can identify and notate the key signatures of music being studied. I can perform triplets and syncopated rhythm patterns. Musicality 7.IM.2.5.2 I can identify and demonstrate and understanding of selected concepts of style. I can demonstrate dynamic and tempo control, even when they change. I can perform as an effective member of an ensemble by listening to the entire ensemble. Sight-Reading 7.IM.2.6.2 Apply basic elements association with successful sightreading. I can independently and accurately sight-read examples from selected Grade I ensemble music. I can independently use a systematic approach to sight-reading. Page 2 of 4 Intermediate Instrumental Music, Quarter 3 Scales and Rudiments 7.IM.2.7.3 Perform a major scale in at least four keys/four rudiments. Winds/Mallets I can play the chromatic scale. Strings I can play e, g and d natural minor scales and arpeggios one octave. Percussion I can play flam accent rudiments on my snare drum and demonstrate dampening techniques on timpani. 3.0 Improvising 7.IM.3.2.2 Create a variation of a simple melody of no more than three pitches. I can create a variation of a given melody with up to three pitches. 4.0 Composing 7.IM.4.1.3 Create a melody using a variety of pitches and rhythms. 5.0 Reading and Notating 7.IM.5.1.2 Recognize and apply standard notation symbols for dynamics, tempo, articulation, and expression. I can create, write and perform an original melody within specified guidelines. I can accurately perform examples from a variety of Grade II music. I can notate basic rhythmic patterns when presented aurally. 6.0 Listening and Analyzing 7.IM.6.2.2 Describe, verbally or by writing/drawing/mapping, specific events in a musical example. I can identify form, genre, tempo, dynamics and orchestration in a selected example. 7.0 Evaluating 7.IM.7.2.2 Construct a written evaluation of one’s own performance using appropriate vocabulary/terminology. I can evaluate my own performance, verbal or written, based on selected criteria and using appropriate vocabulary/terminology. 8.0 Interdisciplinary Connections 7.IM.8.3.2 Discuss the progress of technology throughout the history of music. I can describe how technology has changed over the last 100 years.
