2016.17 Sixth Grade Beginning Instrumental Music, Quarter 1 On-Going Standards: Students will regularly demonstrate proper daily maintenance of their instruments at an age-appropriate level. They will demonstrate understanding of historical connections to the music being performed. Standards Student Friendly “I Can” Statements Proper Instrument Care and Maintenance 6.IM.2.1.1 Assemble/Disassemble instrument and demonstrate proper storage/handling of instrument. I can clean and maintain the playing condition of my instrument. 6.IM.2.1.2 Demonstrate proper daily maintenance routine. (i.e., corks, slides, valves, reeds, bows, strings). I can periodically clean and maintain the playing condition of my instrument. Technique 6.IM.2.3.1 Demonstrate correct posture (in sitting and/or standing positions), proper hand position, and instrument carriage. I can demonstrate and apply correct technique on my instrument by: sitting or standing with correct posture holding my instrument, mallets or sticks properly placing my fingers in the correct places to accurate intonation 6.WCE.IM.1 Maintain a practice log and/or journal. Page 1 of 3 Beginning Instrumental Music, Quarter 1 Big Ideas/Key Concepts: At the beginning level, students should be able to play with correct technique basic unison melodies. Students will gain a beginning understanding of their instruments, music reading and performance evaluation. 1.0 Singing 6.IM.1.1.1 Sing musical examples using stepwise intervallic pitches. I can sing a melody based on repeated pitches. I can sing a melody based on step-wise intervals. 6.IM.1.1.2 Sing a melody in unison with pitch-accuracy. I can count and sing basic rhythmic patterns. 2.0 Playing Instruments Proper Instrument Care and Maintenance 6.IM.2.1.1 Assemble/Disassemble instrument and demonstrate proper storage/handling of instrument. I can name the parts of my instrument. Pitch and Rhythms 6.IM.2.4.1 Identify and perform basic rhythms and pitches through verbalization. I can identify, notate, and perform basic rhythms such as quarter notes and quarter rests and beginning pitches. Scales 6.IM.2.7.1 Explain the concept of and perform a major scale in at least two keys/two rudiments. Winds/Mallets I can play a 5 note scale. Strings I can play a one octave D scale. Percussion I can play with a steady beat on my percussion instrument. 3.0 Improvising 6.IM.3.1.2 Apply the fundamental concepts of improvisation using simple rhythmic patterns on one to three pitches. I can improvise an eight beat melody using quarter notes and three pitches. I can identify, both written and oral, basic notation symbols (beginning pitches and rhythms). I can demonstrate my ability to read music through performance. 6.WCE.IM.2 Read and perform music incorporating basic music symbols and vocabulary. I can understand and apply the following academic vocabulary: staff clef measure sharp sign (strings) flat sign (band) natural repeat sign time signature 6.0 Listening and Analyzing 6.IM.6.1.1 Describe a simple musical example using basic music vocabulary/terminology. I can describe beginning musical examples using basic vocabulary terminology. 7.0 Evaluating 6.IM.7.1.1 Discuss criteria for evaluating performances and compositions. I can determine what constitutes a good beginning performance using correct vocabulary and terminology. 8.0 Interdisciplinary Connections 6.IM.8.2.1 Understand basic relationships between music and other academic disciplines. I can make basic connections between music and other disciplines such as science and math (sound waves and fractions). 6.WCE.IM.3 Understand the concept of a ratio and use ratio language to describe a ratio relationship between two quantities.
