E.G phenolphthalein Universal indicator is made from a mixture of different indicators so each colour indicates a range of pH values. Titrations • Titrations are used to find out exactly how much acid is needed to neutralise an alkali or vice versa. • It can then be used to calculate unknown concentrations. • Method: – Fill a conical flask with 25cm3 alkali of unknown concentration – Add 2-3 drops indicator – Fill a burette with acid – Using the burette add the acid a bit at a time (say 5cm3) – When indicator changes colour you have reached the end point.
