A group of severe disorders characterized
by disorganized and delusional thinking
disturbed perceptions, and inappropriate
emotions and actions
 This means that people who have this disorder sometimes
hear things that no one else hears and sometimes they see
things that aren’t really there





Difficulty speaking or thinking in a coherent
manner
May be distracted and possibly tormented,
by vivid images or voices
Don’t have a social life due to their
psychological disorder because others try
to avoid them
Muttering, gesturing, hearing random
voices
Random thoughts
DSM-IV-TR CRITERIA
 People with this disorder experience a
disturbance that lasts 6 months and includes at
least 1 month of active symptoms, including at
least two of the following
1 delusions,
2 hallucinations,
3 disorganized speech,
4 disturbed or catatonic behavior, or
5 negative symptoms, such as flat affect or
severe lack of motivation



There are basically two different ways to develop
schizophrenia
By inheriting it by genes during the pregnancy or early
childhood
By abusing drugs to the extent that it messes with your head



There are quite some things that teens can do
to decrease their schizophrenia
Don’t use street drugs or moderate alcahol
Make an effort to sociolize and take to others
Avoid social isolation
Have and maintian friendships with adults
Learn to have a positive perspective on the
world
Learn how to deal with stress and anxiety
Seek qualified psychologists and psychiatrist if
having trouble coping





Outcome cases with schizophrenia
About 45 per cent recover after one or more
episodes.
About 20 per cent show constant symptoms and
increasing disability.
About 35 per cent display a mixed pattern, with
varying degrees of improvement or deterioration.
Worse case scenario the person with schizophrenia
ends up committing suicide
ex. Margaret Mary Ray stepped in front of a moving
train in October 1998, following years of delusional
pursuit of celebrities and multiple arrests and
hospitalization





