Narcissistic Personality Disorder




This disorder is rare.
Less than 1% of the general population are
actually diagnosed with NPD
Men are about 70% more likely than women
to have this disorder.
Although many adolescents may seem to
have traits they are not diagnosed until they
are adults.
They do not take criticism well and are easily offended which
will cause them to feel humiliated or anger.
 They pursue mainly selfish goals and will take advantage of
others in order to achieve it and have little ability to feel
empathy.
 Feel that where ever they go they must get treated almost
like royalty for no reason.
 Get constant attention or admiration from the people
around them.
 Exaggerate achievements and talents.










The exact cause is unknown.
Probable causes:
Excessive pampering
High expectation
Parental disdain for fears and needs during childhood
Neglect and emotional abuse
Unpredictable or unreliable care giving from parents
Learning manipulative behaviors from parents
Parents who teach that vulnerability is unacceptable may grow up not
being able to feel empathy towards others.



There is no actual cure for this disorder but
there are some things that might help.
Talk therapy may help the patient understand
others feelings in a positive and
compassionate way.
For patients with severe NPD are normally
hospitalized and will be treated with
individual psychotherapy and group therapy.


The outcome depends on how severe the
disorder is.
But there are things that may complicate the
treatment:





Alcohol
Drugs
Relationships
Work
Family problems

However if the patient is experiencing
depression, anxiety, or other similar symptoms
they can get treated with medication.

Now that you know the type of behavior that
patients with NPD show, does that mean that
they will Always have bad thoughts or do evil
things?
