“Segmental” Organization
• Spinal cord is organized length-wise as a
series of segments that are quite similar in
structure

Nourishing the CNS
• Blood is the means by which the brain is
supplied oxygen and nutrients
• Brain is 2 % of body mass, but uses about
20 % of blood in the body

• Glycogen: energy source for the brain
• brain can’t keep stores of glycogen
• Without blood, the brain quickly becomes
“malnourished” without oxygen and nutrients
