How Does Evolution
Happen?
Pages 174 to179
Objectives
 Describe
the four parts to Charles
Darwin’s theory of evolution by
natural selection.
 Relate genetics to evolution.
My Hero
 Charles
Darwin-
– Darwin signs on as a “naturalist” aboard
the Beagle.
– He travels all over the world to study
the natural world.
– The Galapagos Islands (Ecuador)
provide the young Darwin with many
interesting observations.
Charles Darwin
Darwin’s Finches
 Darwin
observed several species of
finches on the Galapagos Islands.
Each species of finch had a different
shaped beak. WHY?
1. Ground Finch- Heavy
beak for eating large,
heavy seeds.
2. E
3. Cactus Finch- Tough,
longer beak for getting
seeds out of cactus
plants.
4. Warbler Finch- Small
narrow beak used to
catch small insects.
Natural Selection
 Natural
Selection- The process by
which organisms that are better
adapted to their environment survive
and reproduce more successfully
than the less well adapted organisms
do.
