Mr. Altorfer Science How Does Evolution Happen? Pages 174 to179 Objectives Describe the four parts to Charles Darwin’s theory of evolution by natural selection. Relate genetics to evolution. My Hero Charles Darwin- – Darwin signs on as a “naturalist” aboard the Beagle. – He travels all over the world to study the natural world. – The Galapagos Islands (Ecuador) provide the young Darwin with many interesting observations. Charles Darwin Darwin’s Finches Darwin observed several species of finches on the Galapagos Islands. Each species of finch had a different shaped beak. WHY? 1. Ground Finch- Heavy beak for eating large, heavy seeds. 2. E 3. Cactus Finch- Tough, longer beak for getting seeds out of cactus plants. 4. Warbler Finch- Small narrow beak used to catch small insects. Natural Selection Natural Selection- The process by which organisms that are better adapted to their environment survive and reproduce more successfully than the less well adapted organisms do.
