Chapter 7 – Cell Structures and Function Read pp. 169 – 173 and answer the following questions
7-1 Life is Cellular
Living things are made up of units called ________________________ - a collection of living matter
enclosed by a barrier that separates the cell from its surrounding.
Using the timeline, place the following in order of their discovery, from the earliest to the latest. Name the
scientist
____ All plants are made of cells
______________________________
____ Cells organelles may have once been free-living organisms __________________________
____ The first cells were seen and a book published with drawings
____ All animals are made of cells
___________________________
____ Observation of organisms living in pond water
____ Cells can only come from other cells

The Cell theory states:
1. All living things are composed of ______________.
2. Cells are the basic units of ___________________ and ____________________ in living things
3. New cells are produced from ___________________ cells.
The two types of microscope are:
Transmission electron microscopes can be used to explore cell _________________ and large
____________________ molecules.
Scanning electron microscopes produce [ 2D ] [ 3D ] [ 4D ] images of the cell. (circle)
Specimens viewed under electron microscopes must first be [preserved ] [stained ]. (circle)
Prokaryotes and Eukaryotes
Cells come in a great variety of shapes and an amazing range of sizes.
Cells fall into 2 broad categories depending on whether they contain a ___________________ - a large
membrane-enclosed structure that contains the cell’s genetic material in the form of DNA (a membrane
is a thin layer of material that serves as a covering or lining). It controls many of the cells activities.
Two types of cells:
___________________- cells that contain nucleus
___________________ – cells that do not contain a nucleus
Despite their differences all cells have four structures in common:
1. __________________ - Contains genetic material
2. __________________ – site of protein synthesis (place where proteins are made)

3. __________________ – Gelatin-like material inside the cell that the organelles are suspended in
4. ____________________ - controls what materials enter and leave a cell
Use the Venn Diagram to compare the two types of cells

7-2 Eukaryotic Cell Structure
Eukaryotic (yew ker ee oh tik) cells contain organelles- (little organs) each has a specific function for cell
survival.
Cell biologists divide the eukaryotic cell into two major parts: the __________________ and the
________________________.
