Comparing and
Ordering Integers
Section 1-6 (pages 34-38)
What is an integer?

The set of positive whole numbers
their opposites, and zero.
Integers to the left of zero, are
less than zero and are negative.

Examples???
Integers to the right of zero, are
greater than zero and are positive.

Finding an Opposite

Two numbers that are the same distance
from 0 on a number line, but in opposite
directions are opposites.
Example: Find the opposite of -5.
-5 -4 -3 -2

Finding an Absolute Value

The absolute value of a number is its
distance from 0 on a number line.
*notation: the absolute value of -2 is written as |-2|
Example: Find |-4| and |4|.
