Transcript
El Nino
► Every
three to eight years, a temporary
change in the oceanic and atmospheric
conditions occurs over the south Pacific
Ocean.
► This change causes changes in temperature,
rainfall, and storms throughout the entire
world.
What happens
• Air pressure rises over the Indian Ocean,
Indonesia, and Australia.
• Air pressure falls over Tahiti and the rest of the
central and eastern Pacific Ocean.
• Trade winds in the south Pacific weaken or head
east.
• Warm air rises near Peru, causing rain in the
deserts there.
• Warm water spreads from the west Pacific across
to the east Pacific. It takes the rain with it, causing
rainfall in normally dry areas.

►
►
Gyre: A swirling vortex, particularly largescale wind and ocean currents. Example
the Sargasso Sea
Sargasso Sea is the Ocean gyre in the mid
Atlantic made up of North Atlantic, Gulf
Stream, Canary and North Equatorial
Currents.

► The
turning of currents can create ocean
eddies which one can think of as whirl
pools.
► Generally they do not create giant whirl
pools but are strong enough to create
turbulent and unsettling waters.
► Counter currents are currents which flow
opposite the wind.
