Rhythm PT 2 Common Notation • The way in which music is transcribed is known as common notation. – Common notation divides music into segments known as measures or bars. – These segments are divided with vertical lines known as bar lines Example of common notation Downbeat • The first beat of a measure in music . • These beats are organized in a pattern of beats know as a Time Signature. Time Signature • The top number indicates how many beats are in a measure. • The bottom number indicates the type of number that will receive one beat. Time Signature • Understanding the bottom number. – 4 = A Quarter note (a fourth) – The quarter note will receive one beat Common Time • The most common note values are known as common time. • While music is made up of notes (pitches, sounds), music can also employee silences (rests).
