Social skills and competences:
During 35 years I have been a teacher and a researcher at different universities and countries. I was also involved in administrative tasks (in academic
and business environments). Because of that I contacted with many different people and cultures and lead several groups in different contexts (both
academic and industrial). Communication ability is central to fulfill the different aspects required by my past work. The capacity of active listening,
resolving conflicts, sharing ideas, sense of humor are some of the skills that
I do have and that were maturated along time.
Organizational skills and competences:
I found and was the first Rector of a private University. I was the
founder of two research groups that acquired international recognition (e.g.
prizes) having supervised several graduate students. I was the Head of the
Computer Science Department of the University of Coimbra and the Director of the research Centre for Informatics and Systems of the University of
Coimbra (CISUC). I organized several international scientific conferences,
summer schools and training actions. All these activities imply leadership
and teamwork skills which I do have. Also, when several problems arise all
at once, which occurred frequently in the different jobs I had, it is important
to harness stress, clearly identify priorities and stay focused. I used these
skills to end up with success stories in the different roles I assumed in the
past.
Other skills and competences:
Being a researcher I have to be creative, always seeking for new and
innovative solutions for hard problems. Being a teacher I’m always trying
to motivate students and must be curious enough to learn and explore new
ways of teaching. But this is only possible if you are a self motivated person. During 35 years the high marks given to my work as a researcher and

a teacher by externals evaluators and the students themselves prove that I
have been successful ant thus have the necessary above mentioned skills.
