7.1.1 Study: The Door to the Core
Earth Science Core (S2157608)
Study Sheet
Name: ____________________
Date: ____________
Use the spaces below to take notes on the key concepts presented in this study.
Main Idea #1: Scientists can collect information on the surface of Earth that gives them a hint as
to what is below the surface.
Main Idea #2: Geologists have analyzed seismic-wave data and determined the structure of
Earth’s interior.
7.1.2 Study: The Mantle and Crust
Earth Science Core (S2157608)
Study Sheet
Name: ____________________
Date: ____________
Use the spaces below to take notes on the key concepts presented in this study.
Main Idea: Earth is composed of rock layers, with the mantle located below the crust.
7.2.1 Study: A Magnetic Personality
Study Sheet
Earth Science Core (S2157608)
Name: ____________________
Date: ____________
Main Idea #1: Earth contains an ever-shifting magnetic field that protects us from getting
bombarded with too many charged particles.
Main Idea #2: The north and south poles of Earth’s magnetic field cyclically switch places.
Main Idea #3: Knowledge of the structure of Earth’s interior has allowed scientists to devise a
theory as to why Earth has a magnetic field. It is called the dynamo theory.
7.3.1 Study: Plate Tectonics
Earth Science Core (S2157608)
Study Sheet
Name: ____________________
Date: ____________
Use the spaces below to take notes on the key concepts presented in this study.
Main Idea #1: Alfred Wegener theorized that Earth’s crust is constantly moving in a process
calledcontinental drift.
Main Idea #2: The movement of Earth’s layers helps define its mechanical layers.
Main Idea #3: Plate tectonics studies the movement of Earth’s layers. Depending on which way the
plates move with respect to one another, they form three types of boundaries.
Main Idea #4: Geologists continue to create new explanations and theories as to why and how the
lithosphere’s plates move.
7.3.3 Study: Whose Fault Is It Anyway?
Earth Science Core (S2157608)
Study Sheet
Name: ____________________
Date: ____________
Use the spaces below to take notes on the key concepts presented in this study.
Main Idea: As the lithosphere’s plates slowly move around, they interact along various types of
faults.
