Marketing Objective
(Doucett, 2011) gives many suggestions for creating an effective and efficient marketing
plan. The first step is to set clear goals for what will be accomplished. The second step is to
define the audience. The third step is to develop a clear story or message for your audience. The
fourth step is to keep the presentation visually appealing. The fifth step is to stay consistent in
promotional pieces. The sixth step is to plan a promotional event to make the organization
visible to you audience. The last step is to ask for feedback after the event is completed.
The overall marketing goal for this makerspace is to reach out to the main audience
which is families. My first action would be to connect with community organizations which
serve families. Organizations such as the local home school associations, public schools,
preschools, and libraries would definitely be on my list of contacts. I would also like to reach
out to influential government officials in my area, which may include the mayor, school
superintendent, and city council members. Another marketing idea is to attend community
events. Representing the makerspace at street fairs, parades, and cultural events are great way
to become visible to the community.
Sample Marketing Plan 1
Objective: Use marketing strategies to make makerspace visible to a diverse group of
children and families.
Positioning Statement: We provide a creative space where parents can support their
children’s early literacy development. Our staff are sensitive to the needs of families and
provide quality service. Our facility is designed to be a fun, hands-on, and interactive
environment.
Key Message: We help children enter school ready to read. We provide the space,
resources, and tools to support caregivers in creating early literacy products and materials
with their children.
Main Audience: Children and their parents.
Planned Event: Free open house event
Sample Marketing Plan 2
Objective: Use marketing strategies to make makerspace visible to community leaders.
Positioning Statement: All families are welcome to use the space. The ultimate goal is to
provide equal access to technology in a literacy rich environment which will result in
improved skills regardless of economic, developmental, or social status.
Key Message: This space will be open to ALL families interested in assembling materials to
use with children ages three to school age
Main Audience: Community leaders, local Head Start director, public school officials
Planned Event: Attend city council meeting
Promotional Strategies
I feel that creating and developing an internet presence would definitely be an effective
promotional strategy. The makerspace will have a personal website, Twitter account, blog,
Facebook page, and YouTube channel. These tools will be used to promote events, projects, and
provide other pertinent information to clientele. Some other creative technology-based marketing
ideas include: developing a multimedia digital story about the space and designing an introductory
trailer for the makerspace. In addition to using technology, I would like to design advertising tshirts, a logo, business cards, newsletters, flyers, and stickers. These items would be distributed
throughout the community in order to promote the makerspace to various individuals.
