General Purpose
Internship placements in the digital marketing department at the Barbican Centre are
designed to provide successful candidates with hands on experience in the specialist
digital and E-marketing area of the industry. Under the supervision of the placement
manager and through interaction with other department team members, he/she will
have the opportunity to engage in a full spectrum of tasks, gaining an understanding
of how the department works whilst being able to make a real difference to the
department, using skills and experience from the academic world to the placement.
Placements are awarded to enthusiastic candidates who wish to build on their skills in
a marketing and business environment and gain a broader understanding of the
digital marketing world through practical experience for 3 months.

This internship is offered for…
This internship is offered for 3-5 days per week for 3 months. Hours are 10am-6pm
in line with Digital Marketing Team office hours. A time off in lieu system operates
to ensure weekly hours are not exceeded.
Approx starts dates for the next 4 internships: January 2013, April 2013, July 2013
and October 2013.
To gain the full experience interns are encouraged to participate as much as possible
in departmental activity, this may include attending press nights/special performances
other departmental events which may take place in the evenings or weekends.
The successful candidate will have the opportunity to gain experience in the
following areas:
All aspects of digital marketing ranging from social networking and blogging to
website updates and online marketing campaigns:

Learning how to Maintain and develop the Barbican’s online communities
through the main social network sites including Facebook, Twitter, YouTube,
Flickr and Pinterest.

Helping to manage and edit the Barbican’s website images.

Assisting with the planning of the Barbican’s online presence and further
developing our relationship with online communities including bloggers and
social networkers.

Writing online marketing copy for a range of audiences.

Assisting with social media analytics and reach-analysis.

Carrying out online research and assist the digital marketing team with
creating digital content and seeding to appropriate sites.

Helping with link tracking and website analytics.

Monitor and update all the main microsites.

Providing research and analysis for Google Adwords and other pay-per-click
(PPC) campaigns.
To gain the full experience, interns are strongly encouraged to participate in the
entire range of activities. Ideal candidates who demonstrate a willingness to develop
in all aspects of the department’s work.
Entry requirements
This placement would ideally suit a candidate who…

Has a qualification in or studying for a qualification in Business, Marketing or
E-Marketing

Has experience using social networking to promote activities online

Understands the latest digital trends, especially in the arts

An understanding and passion for the arts
Due to the nature of the work in this department, candidates are required to have a
working knowledge of the following…

Good working knowledge of the main social networking sites (e.g. YouTube,
Facebook, Twitter, Flickr, Pinterest, Spotify, SoundCloud etc.) and excellent IT
skills (including Word, PowerPoint and Excel)

Basic Photoshop skills

Basic HTML coding skills

Expenses
Internships at the Barbican Centre are offered on an unpaid basis but to assist the
successful candidate in taking up this opportunity lunch vouchers (redeemable at the
Barbican’s Café) and travel expenses up to the value of a zone 1-6 travel card are
reimbursed.
