Abnormal test review
-Know which collections of symptoms are associated with which disorders
For example: low energy, feelings of worthlessness, thoughts of suicide are characteristic of depression.
-Know the classifications that the various disorders belong to.
For example:
Panic Disorder belongs under Anxiety Disorders.
Psychogenic Amnesia is a Dissociative Disorder.
-Know the factors which are believed to contribute to the various disorders.
For example: chemical imbalances in the brain are thought to be contributing factors in several disorders such as
depression, schizophrenia, bipolar, OCD
-Know how the various theoretical perspectives tend to view the etiology of disorders.
For example:
The psychoanalytic model views mental illness as a product of repressed unconscious conflict.
The cognitive model tends to stress negative and irrational thought.
Your Barron’s book, always a great resource, will be particularly helpful this time because it is organized much like the
class discussions.
For example: It contains descriptions of the various classifications, describes the symptoms of each of these
disorders in that category and has a brief section on how some of the various models have attempted to explain
some of these disorders.
Free Response:
Students may be asked to describe DSM-5 and its purpose and to indicate who consults it.
Students may be asked about one of the classifications, for example:
Describe the Personality Disorder category and describe two disorders in this category. Or Mood, Anxiety etc.
Describe the difference between depression and bipolar and to identify their classification.
Identify the major symptoms of Schizophrenic Disorders and discuss possible causes.
Describe David Rosenhan’s research on mental institutions and his conclusions.
