Explain which of the two perspectives on psychological disorders you think does a better job of explaining their causes and why. How is the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders organized? What is it used for? What did David Rosenhan figure out? Which type of psychological disorders are the most common? If I carried out little rituals everyday to ease my anxiety about the germs or toxins in my environment I would probably be diagnosed with what? What specific things can cause Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder? How many Vietnam veterans reported symptoms of it? What is the difference between social phobia and agoraphobia? Which do you think would impair everyday functioning more, severe generalized anxiety disorder or severe panic disorder? Explain your reasoning. Give three alternate explanations for what causes anxiety disorders. What is the leading cause of disability worldwide? Why do you think that bipolar disorder seems to be correlated with greater levels of creativity? Give evidence for genetic influences causing mood disorders. IS there any other biochemical evidence? Why does the social cognitive perspective explain depression as a “vicious cycle”? What is dissociation? Give evidence that supports the fact that dissociative identity disorder is a true disorder, and evidence that supports the fact that it is just created by therapists. What is the “common cold” of psychological disorders and what is the “cancer”? Explain how these analogies fit. Name and briefly describe the 5 subtypes of schizophrenia. Describe brain differences in schizophrenic people. Is the evidence for a genetic factor to schizophrenia strong? What specific evidence backs your opinion up? What is the key factor in determining whether a person is just eccentric or if they have a disorder? What are the relative contributions of nature and nurture to antisocial personality disorder? Should patients with schizophrenia be hospitalized and treated even if it is against their will? Why or why not? How big a role do you think conditioning plays in the development of phobias and OCD? Briefly discuss the prevalence of psychological disorders in our society. In your opinion did Hitler have a psychological disorder? If so, which one and why? If not, explain why not. Reflect back on what you learned in American History last year. Do you think that our society has become more or less psychologically healthy in the last two hundred years? Why or why not?
