What is everything on the planet made out of? All things on earth are made of ATOMS! OBJECTIVES • Know the three parts of an ATOM: the ELECTRON, PROTON, and NEUTRON. • Explain what makes ATOMS of one ELEMENT different from those of another ELEMENT. • Be able to calculate ATOMIC MASS and ATOMIC NUMBER. All things on earth are made of ATOMS! • ATOM = smallest working unit of matter • The ATOM is so small that it cannot be seen, even when using a microscope at school. • How do we know that atoms exist??? MYSTERIOUS ENERGY! • Atoms give off and take in energy that can be measured. • These measurements help scientists to predict the presence of certain types of atoms. Paperclipium!!! • Group of paper clips = PURE ELEMENT, Paperclipium • One paper clip = one ATOM of Paperclipium. • If you cut the paper clip in half, does the paper clip still work?? • If you split an ATOM, does the ATOM still work? Parts of an ATOM ELECTRON SHELL ELECTRON (-) - NEUTRON (No charge) + (+) NUCLEUS + - Write down 5 observations about the atomic model above. Did you know? • The ELECTRON has a NEGATIVE charge. • The ELECTRON is always moving in the ELECTRON SHELL. It moves too fast to locate. • The PROTON has a POSITIVE charge. • The NEUTRON has NO CHARGE. • The center of the atom is made up of the PROTONS and NEUTRONS and is called the NUCLEUS. PROTON + NEUTRON = ATOMIC MASS • 4 p+ and 4 n = atomic mass? • 8p+ and 7 n = atomic mass? • 72 p+ and 92 n = atomic mass? The atomic mass is the mass of the nucleus. Why don’t we count electrons in the atomic mass?? • ELECTRONS are so small that their mass doesn’t matter! For Example: • Weigh a 4000 lb elephant. Then, pluck a few hairs from the elephants head. Weigh the elephant again, how much do you think it will weigh now? AND • Silver is a pure element made of silver atoms. • Gold is a pure element made of gold atoms. • Do you think the atoms of silver and gold look the same? Do you think they look different? Explain? • 47 protons • 61 neutrons • 47 electrons • 79 protons • 118 neutrons • 79 electrons What are the differences? What is the atomic number of each element? What do you notice about the number of protons and electrons? BREATHE!!! Atomic Number Symbol Name Atomic Mass protons or ________________. electrons ATOMIC NUMBER equals the number of ____________ protons + _______________. neutrons ATOMIC MASS equals the number of ______________ Can you fill in the blank???
