Is GCSE Sociology for you?
What Sociology is.
What Sociology is not.
Some key terms.
What is studied at GCSE.
What Sociology is;
The study of society
So what is “society”?
It’s us!
We look at the way society
shapes the way we behave.
And how the way we
behave shapes society.
What Sociology is not…
• It is not the same as journalism,
although there are similarities; they
ask the same type of questions and
carry out research and investigations.
• BUT in Sociology the research has to be more
rigorous; it has to be reviewed and tested by
other sociologists, it has to be objective, that
means it is not biased in the way that journalism
can be.
What Sociology is not…
• It is not the same as Psychology,
although they both study people,
Psychology focuses on individuals and the brain.
• Sociology focuses on group behaviour, the
structures in society, such as families and how
they influence our behaviour.
Key terms in Sociology…
• We start off by looking at society’s norms and
values
Watch this video clip, think about why it is
surprising.
Key terms…
• Values – what a particular society believes to
be right (or wrong), good (or bad) and
important (and not important). These values
help create norms.
• Norms – these are unofficial, unwritten rules
about what is expected and appropriate
behaviour.
Sociology GCSE…
• In Paper 1 we study different groups in society
and how they shape our behaviour and
attitudes.
• We also look at how sociologists carry out
their research
Sociology GCSE…
• In Paper 2 we study structures of society and
the affects they have on us, our behaviour and
attitudes.
Crime & Deviance
Mass Media
Social Inequality
