PATIENT’S NAME: MEDICATION: atorvastatin calcium (Brand name is Lipitor). WHAT IT'S USED FOR: Atorvastatin calcium is used to lower your cholesterol level. HOW TO TAKE IT § Take drug exactly as prescribed. § Take drug with or without food, but not with grapefruit juice. § Eat small, frequent servings of food and drink plenty fluids to reduce stomach upset. WARNINGS & PRECAUTIONS! § Notify prescriber immediately if you develop muscle pain, tenderness, or weakness (especially if you also experience fever and tiredness). § Expect to have blood tests for liver function while taking this drug. § Avoid driving and other hazardous activities until you know how drug affects your concentration and alertness. § Tell your prescriber if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. SIDE EFFECTS This drug may cause headache, weakness, insomnia, dizziness, chest pain, sinus infection, hoarseness, stomach pain, nausea, constipation, diarrhea, indigestion, passing gas, urinary track infection, back pain, muscle pain, joint pain, arthritis, flulike symptoms, bronchitis, runny nose, infection, swelling, and allergic reactions (including rash). Notify your prescriber of serious or bothersome symptoms. INTERACTIONS § Atorvastatin calcium may interact with cyclosporine, certain other cholesterol-lowering drugs, niacin, erythromycin, some antifungal drugs, antacids, colestipol, digoxin, and hormonal contraceptives. Tell all prescribers that you are taking this drug. § Consult with prescriber before taking any herbs, especially red yeast rice. STORAGE § Store drug at controlled room temperature.
