PATIENT’S NAME: MEDICATION: omeprazole (Brand names include Losec and Prilosec.) WHAT IT'S USED FOR: Omeprazole is used to treat stomach and intestinal ulcers, gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), and certain other conditions. HOW TO TAKE IT Take drug 30 to 60 minutes before a meal, as prescribed. Don't open capsules. Swallow them whole. If you need to administer this drug through a nasogastric tube, separate the capsule but don’t crush pellets. Mix pellets with water. Shake or turn syringe while injecting drug. After giving drug, flush tube with 2 to 4 tablespoonful of water. WARNINGS & PRECAUTIONS! Take drug as prescribed for full course of therapy, even if you are feeling better. Avoid driving and other hazardous activities until you know how the drug affects your concentration and alertness. Tell your prescriber if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. SIDE EFFECTS This drug may cause dizziness, headache, weakness, insomnia, abnormal taste, fungal infection in esophagus, constipation, diarrhea, passing gas, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, belching, high blood sugar, back pain, cough, upper respiratory tract infection, and allergic reactions (including itching and rash). Notify your prescriber of serious or bothersome symptoms. INTERACTIONS Omeprazole may interact with many drugs. Tell all prescribers what drugs you are taking, including over-the-counter medications. Avoid products containing aspirin, other drugs used to ease inflammation (such as ibuprofen), and foods that may irritate the gastrointestinal tract. Avoid alcohol use while taking this drug. STORAGE Store drug in a tightly closed container at room temperature, away from light and moisture. DON'T store it the bathroom.
