Objective: Learning and creating marketing strategies by analyzing new, trendy companies.
Companies: 4Moms, SkinnyPop Popcorn, SoulCycle, Stumptown, The Honest Company,
Boll and Branch, Tender Greens, Epic Provisions, Barry’s Bootcamp, Blue Apron, Au Fudge

Attendance: 3 points per class
Week 1: The Basics of Marketing
-Give a brief overview of marketing terms, how it’s applied, and how it’s used everyday
-Branding – the 5 P’s of marketing, brand personality types
Homework: Research your company and email us a paragraph telling us their mission, values,
vision, and strategies. Include your company’s competitors. Come prepared to discuss as a
group. (5 points)
Week 2: Marketing Yourself
-Understanding yourself first in order to successfully create a brand for a more foreign product
-How others identify you and how you identify yourself
Homework: How is this company important to your life? Email us a paragraph describing how
you believe this company is worthwhile. Show us you trust in the company’s mission. (5 points)
Week 3: Old-school Marketing
-Flyer techniques and their evolution into more modern styles
-“Don’t brand like you’re in the 90’s”
Homework: Make a flyer for your company and email to us. (5 points)
Week 4: Social Media Marketing
-How to best create a consistent brand across all forms of social media so the common consumer
will always recognize the brand
Homework: Pick a social media platform and create a clever post. (5 points)
Week 5: Commercials and Advertisements
-Evolution: comparing old and new ads (Dr. Pepper, Bacon)
-Controversies, fads, and social issues in advertising
Homework: Create a good and bad commercial for your company. Details to be explained in
class. (5 points)
Week 6: Psychology of Physical Marketing
-Merchandising and Store Layout
-What best appeals to the Five Senses
Homework: Create a store layout or an impressionable logo for your company. (5 points) Be
sure your midterm is ready to present next week.
Week 7: Pick a type of marketing and create a mini project about it-PRESENT!!!!!!!!
Midterm Project Due: Create a presentation displaying your marketing strategy. Be prepared
to present to the class in a visual form. Include your past assignments and any other strategies
we discussed in class. (50 points)
Week 8: Marketing Analytics and Research
-“Staring from the ground up” – what you need to accomplish first before branding begins
-Delve into the importance of “Big Data”
Homework: Critique the marketing strategies of the first group used for your new company.
Research your new demographic and what appeals to them. Describe in a paragraph how you’re
going to adapt your company. (5 points)
Week 9: International Marketing
-Clarity and transparency across the brand to sustain the level of consumers
-Importance of language (examples of improper translation blunders)
Homework: How would you take your company abroad? What would you change? Write a
paragraph. (5 points)
Week 10: Packaging/Fashion and Cosmetics Marketing
-How these industries work together and mirror each other
-Celebrity influence on trends
Homework: Pick a celebrity endorser and outline their responsibilities. (5 points)
Week 11: Marketing Ethics
-Controversial issues companies have had with their marketing (always consider your target
market)
Homework: Find a company that has had a controversial issue. Troubleshoot potential
controversies with your brand. (5 points)
Week 12: Introduce Final Project
-Create a marketing strategy for your company
-Outline the components of a marketing strategy and give examples
Final Project: Create a more in-depth marketing strategy presentation. Please include a flyer,
social media post, store layout/logo, commercial, celebrity endorser and challenges you have
with your new demographic. Do you think your marketing strategy will be successful and why?
Be prepared to present in week 14. We are giving you 2 weeks to complete the project. (56
points)
Week 13: THANKSGIVING BREAK  Work on final project.
Week 14: PRESENT!!!
