JOB POSITION DESCRIPTION SUMMARY
Job Title
Public Relations Intern
Reports To: Marketing & Communications Manager
Scope of Work
Works with the Marketing and Communications manager to assist with Marketing and Public Relations activities
that support the ReStores and the affiliate: Habitat for Humanity of Northern Virginia.
RESTORE DONOR SOLICITATION
 Build a list (through phone calls, e-mails) of prospective retail donors and individuals that live in
communities near our two ReStore locations
 Prepare marketing materials to solicit in-kind donations to the stores
 Promote ReStore sales, volunteer opportunities, donation needs through social media outlets
PUBLIC RELATIONS
 Write articles based on HHNV (i.e. programs, events, ReStore, families, etc) and disseminate to local news
sources.
 Draft press releases
 Research media sources and create spreadsheet with current media contacts
 Post events to online calendars
Proposed Hours & Length of Internship
 8-week Internship (June 1- July 31)
 Monday – Friday, 10am – 4pm
 Internship is based at Habitat Northern Virginia’s Arlington office, but requires occasional travel to
Chantilly and Alexandria ReStores
Compensation
 $1,500 / 8-week internship – Habitat Northern Virginia budgets for an annual summer internship position
Type of Student
 Full-time, undergraduate student
Special Skills
 Understanding of and dedication to Habitat's affordable housing mission and ReStore program
 Excellent communication and people skills
 Computer skills, including word processing, E-mail, presentation and spreadsheet software. Experience
with Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator a plus
 Strong organizational skills and ability to multi-task
 The ability to relate to diverse populations, as well as business and community members
 Ability to work evenings and weekends as necessary
Evaluation
The PR Intern will participate in weekly one-on-one meetings with the Marketing & Communications Manager
Manager to identify priorities to accomplish each week, and evaluate work performed. They will also participate in
weekly team meetings, including Habitat’s Director of Development and Resource Development Coordinators.
The Public Relations Intern will also participate in an exit interview, to evaluate work accomplished and experience
with our affiliate.
