Inventory, Monitoring, Research Catalog 2/28/13 1. Topic Bird Interactions with native and non-native species, including with other birds, vegetation, mammals, and arthropods. 2. Background Information on how avian fauna impacts, and is impacted by, non-native species and habitat on Mauna Kea is needed to guide management actions of both birds as well as habitat and prey/predators. 3. Purpose Develop species list, estimate abundances, identify phonological patterns, identify habitat(s) used at a species level, and document if reproductive activity occurs on UH managed lands. 4. Research Objectives Somewhat dependent upon species/guild(s) chosen. Examples include invasive species and disease transmission, foraging competition, behavioral and therein habitat displacement across species, predation upon songbirds by mammals, etc. 5. Management Applications Examples include role of habitat restoration projects and impacts on endangered Palila –to- causes behind dead birds occasionally encountered at the summit (are such instances good indicators of disease or more likely simply instances of exhaustion). 6. Comprehensive Management Plan (and Sub-Plans) Applicability a. Priority –to be completed b. NRMP Source – Section: to be completed. 7. Desired Outcomes Technical report and data set(s) summarizing findings. Management recommendations to improve restoration, management, and invasive species control efforts. Prepared by: F.Klasner
