GLOSSARY: DOMAINS/CATEGORIES
This document is intended to serve as a reference document for the domains/
categories used for the measures database.
Domains/Categories
 Describes the primary (general) category under
which the measure falls, and the secondary
category where applicable.
The first column is a list of domains/categories, while the second offers additional
explanation useful for classifying or when searching for measures.
In the database, domains are selected from a drop-down list. Up to two domains can
be selected for measures that could be classified under multiple domains.

DESCRIPTION
Includes measures related to the physical, sexual or
emotional mistreatment of a child/adolescent,
including neglect.
Includes measures related to person-level,
interpersonal or system-level barriers to care (e.g.
demographic characteristics, financial resources,
distrust, negative experiences, accessibility and
availability of services).
For issues related to stigma, please see “Stigma”.
Includes measures related to anxiety in general as
well as more specific anxiety disorders, including:
- Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder
- Generalized Anxiety Disorder
- Separation Anxiety Disorder
- Social Anxiety Disorder
- Panic Disorder
- Phobias
Does not include the anxiety disorder PostTraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).
For information on measures related to PTSD, see
“Trauma and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder”.
Includes measures related to the behavioural
problems of ADD and ADHD.

DESCRIPTION
 Includes measures related to ASD and PDD,
including:
- Autistic Disorder
- Asperger’s Syndrome
- Childhood Disintegrative Disorder
- Rhett’s Disorder
- PDD – Not Otherwise Specified (or PDDNOS)
 Includes measures of general or specific
behavioural problems.
 Examples of specific behavioural problems include:
- Conduct Disorder
- Oppositional Defiant Disorder
 See “Attention Deficit Disorder, Attention Deficit
Hyperactivity Disorder” for measures related
specifically to ADD or ADHD.
 Includes physical, verbal, social and electronic
bullying, racial discrimination and sexual
harassment.
 Bullying refers to intentional harm repeated over
time in a situation where there is an imbalance of
power.
 For violent or aggressive behaviour in general, see
“Violence, aggression, delinquency, and risk
assessment”.
 Includes client perception of services.
 Includes measures of intelligence and academic
performance, cognitive skills, language skills and
assessment for learning disabilities.
 For problem-solving, see “Problem-solving,
decision-making”.
 Includes general and situation-specific coping
measures that look at coping skills and coping style.
 Includes measures related to an agency’s ability to
work effectively cross-culturally and deliver services
in a manner that keeps in mind cultural differences.

DESCRIPTION
 Includes depression and mood disorders/mood
states, as well as issues related to affective
disorders (not including those related to anxiety,
panic or PTSD).
 Examples include:
- Bipolar Disorder (former names include
manic depression or manic-depressive
disorder)
- Seasonal Affective Disorder
 Includes measures that assess skills or emerging
skills related to concepts such as memory, motor
skills, communication, etc.
 Also includes measures designed to assess
development and functioning in the profoundly
disabled.
 For measures related to Autism Spectrum Disorders
or Pervasive Developmental Disorders, see the
corresponding domain.
 Includes measures related to eating disorders such
as anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, and bingeeating disorder.
 Also includes measures that look at attitudes toward
food and weight in general.
 Includes measures used to assess employmentrelated skills and interests in youth.
 Also includes measures assessing attitudes towards
employment.
 Includes measures not related to a specific
diagnosis (or related to two or more domains) that
can be used for multiple purposes, including
triage/screening, needs assessment/treatment
planning and outcome measurement.
 Includes assessments of group or community
collaborations/partnerships/relationships and group
or community engagement.
 Includes measures related to hope and
hopelessness.
 Measures for related concepts such as optimism
may be included here.
 Includes measures not related to any of the
domains/categories specified.
 These can include measures designed to address
issues related to child and youth mental health but
which do not measure child and youth mental health
outcomes directly.

DESCRIPTION
 Includes measures relating to various aspects of
parenting, including parent-child relationship,
parenting efficacy and parenting style.
 Includes measures related to:
- Antisocial personality disorder
- Avoidant personality disorder
- Borderline personality disorder
- Dependent personality disorder
- Histrionic personality disorder
- Narcissistic personality disorder
- Paranoid personality disorder
- Schizoid personality disorder
- Schizotypal personality disorder
 For obsessive-compulsive disorder, see “Anxiety”.
 Includes measures of problem-solving and decisionmaking abilities and styles.
 Includes measures related to all stages of program
evaluation which do not fit under other domains, or
that were designed specifically for program
evaluation.
 Note that measures under any domain/in any
category could potentially be used as a part of
program evaluation activities.
 Includes measures related to both the longer-term
and immediate state of satisfaction of needs and
demands (material, biological, psychological, social,
etc.), which are ultimately linked to life satisfaction.
 Includes measures related to schizophrenia and
dissociative disorders including dissociative identity
disorder (also/previously known as multiple
personality disorder).
 Includes measures of:
- Attitudes toward school (including toward
teachers, etc.)
- Student motivation/commitment to school
- Teacher stress
- School climate/milieu
 Does not include measures of teacher perceptions
of behaviour or development, academic
performance/intelligence, or bullying/harassment.

 This domain does not include self-report measures
(measures where the client reports on their own
behaviours, achievements, etc.) which are not
related to the concept of self-perception. Such
measures are classified according to the concept
being reported on.
 Includes measures of:
- Homophobia
- Sexual attitudes
- Sexual behaviour, including risk-taking
- Sexual/gender identity
 For sexual harassment, see “Bullying, harassment”.
 Includes measures that focus on social or emotional
skills (including emotion regulation), interpersonal
relationships (e.g. peer group relationships,
personal/interpersonal functioning/relations) and
communication.
 For parent-child relationships, see “Parenting, family
assessment”.
 For therapist-client relationships, see “Therapeutic
alliance”.
 Includes stigma, prejudice or discrimination
experienced in relation to mental illness/mental
health.
 This category includes measures of stigma,
prejudice or discrimination experienced as a result
of race/culture, sex, etc. in relation to mental illness
or mental health issues.
 It does not include measures of stigma, prejudice
and discrimination based on race/culture, sex, etc.
that are not linked to a mental illness/mental health
issue.
 For homophobia or related concepts, see “Sexual

 For sexual harassment or racial discrimination, see
“Bullying, harassment”.

DESCRIPTION
 Includes issues of substance use/abuse and
dependence/addictions.
 Includes alcohol and drug-related measures.
Suicide, self-harm
 Includes measures related to suicide, including
suicidality or suicidal ideation, and self-harming
activities.
 Refers to the relationship between therapist and
client.
 This domain may also include measures related to
client engagement (with treatment) in a more
general sense (not limited to the relationship with
the therapist).
 Includes measures related to Tic disorders,
including Tourette’s disorder.
 Includes measures of various types of trauma,
including grief, stress and the trauma-related
disorder Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).

 Includes measures related to risk behaviours such
as firesetting, gang activity, etc., violence,

 Measures designed specifically for use with
delinquent/criminal populations that could fall under
other domains are included here, with a secondary
domain identified.
 For sexual risk-taking, see “Sexual behaviour,
development, attitudes”.
 For bullying and related concepts, see “Bullying,
harassment”.
 The Centre of Excellence for Youth Engagement
defines Youth Engagement as the “meaningful
participation and sustained involvement of a young
person, in an activity with focus outside of him or
herself”.
 Measures related to this concept are classified
under this domain.
