Timeline of the Crusades 1095 1100 1145 The First Crusade 1096-1099 The goal was to conquer the Holy Land. There were hundreds of thousands of crusaders. This was the only crusade that Roman Catholic fought Eastern Orthodox Catholics. The crusaders needed money to retake the Holy Land so the French pay them to attack Zara. The Byzantine emperor was killed and the Pope sacked Constantinople and the Byzantine Empire. They never went to Jerusalem. The Children’s Crusade: 1212 1217 The Children’s Crusade was established to being innocence and goodness to the wars. About 30,000 children participated and were sold into slavery. Then 2,000 from France died when their ships sunk others were sold into slavery. It was not a successful crusade. The Fifth Crusade: 1217 – 1221 1228 1248 The goal was to establish secure base in Egypt from which to take Muslim lands. The new Muslim ruler offered to give the Christens the Holy Land but the pope said no because he wanted Egypt too. They camped in the Nile River flood plain and were washed away when the Muslims opened the rivers barriers. The Sixth Crusade: 1228 the goal was to recapture the Holy Land. King Fredrick of France was granted Jerusalem as long as Muslims were allowed to worship there in exchange Christians were to help Muslims fight the Mongols. The pope excommunicated Fredrick for adopting Muslim beliefs and practices. The crusade it was a failure because although the city was Christian none were allowed to travel there. The Seventh Crusade: 1248 – 1254 1270 The goal was to capture a base in Egypt and regain the Holy Land. Turkism Muslims had overrun Jerusalem. Most of the crusaders got dysentery and were easily defeated. It was a failure. The Eighth Crusade: 1270 – 1291 The goal was to covert Bay of Tunis to Christianity and recapture holy places in the Holy Land. The French crusaders united with the Mongols to attack but the Muslims had armies of kidnapped Russian slave children (Mamelukes). They defeated the Mongols and all christens in the area. The crusade was a failure.
