The Digestive System
Period 1
Leah W, Louise M,
Matthew H, Gio R
The Digestive System:
Esophagus
Uses muscles to channel the
food from the throat into the
stomach through a mucus
lined tube
Stomach
Uses enzymes, like Pepsin, and
acid to break down food and
extract nutrients
Acid Reflux: a disease in which
the valve at the entrance to
one’s stomach doesn’t close
properly, allowing stomach
acid to go up one’s esophagus
Liver
Filters the blood flow
Detoxifies bacteria and harmful
substances using the enzyme,
SGOT
Produces bile
Homeostasis: the liver produces
a certain amount of acidic bile
to maintain a balanced pH.
Gallbladder
Stores the bile that the
liver produced before
being used in the
stomach
Pancreas
Produces enzymes, including
bicarbonate
These enzymes are used in
the small intestine
Also makes insulin
Small Intestine
90% of absorption of nutrients
Villi (small hair-like fibers that line the
intestinal wall) absorb the nutrients
and transfer them to the
bloodstream (circulatory system)
Celiac Disease: a genetic condition in
which gluten (a protein found in
wheat, rye, barley, malt, and more)
destroys the villi, resulting in
Large Intestine (Colon)
Absorbs water from the leftover
food that was not digested
Transmits waste out of the
body that cannot be used
Appendix: a small vestigial
organ at end of the colon
with no known purpose
Pathway of Food
Esophagus
Stomach
Small Intestine
Large Intestine
