in the First Punic War. Rome won, gaining
Sicily.

In 238 BCE Sardinia was taken from
Carthage.

 The Roman army was made up of groups of soldiers
called legions.
 Legions consisted of over 5,000 soldiers.
 There were about 30 legions in the Roman Empire.
 Legions were divided into smaller groups.
 A Contubernium had 8 men.
 Ten Contubernium made a Centuria. 80 men.
 Finally, 6 Centurie made up a cohort.
 Cohorts were the basic fighting unit consisting of 480
men.
