Avian Infectious Bronchitis virus – combat with Virkon® S
As a part of the sustained investment for Virkon® S, we have successfully re-tested Virkon® S against
this crucial pathogen Avian Infectious Bronchitis virus (IBv) to ensure terminal and continuous
biosecurity measures adopting this renown viral disinfectant can assist producers.
Infectious Bronchitis (IBv) virus has been a challenge for the poultry industry for many years, making a
resurgence in recent months !; Is it causing secondary challenges late in the broiler flock ? It is
aggravated by potential early tracheal damage from aldehyde reaction ? these are questions for the
veterinary support on farm.
Infectious Bronchitis (IBv) is a viral disease caused by coronavirus. The virus attacks the epithelial cells
of the upper and lower respiratory tract, damaging the trachea and air sacs and predisposing birds to
possible secondary bacterial infection, such as ‘late outbreaks’ of E.coli septicaemia and airacculitis*(i) .
We understand that whenever possible, the role of IB virus should be investigated in any outbreaks of E.Coli
septicaemia and airsacculitis in broilers. To incriminate IB virus, the histopathologic lesion in tracheas and
result of PCR test could always be interpreted in conjunction with each other. Protecting the flock through

vaccination and strict biosecurity measures would be options available to the producers. Dr.T. Aziz.
Terminal/Clean out or Flock turnaround - biosecurity measures are common place, but are the
products chosen adequate to offer decontamination (where there has been a challenge or live
vaccination ) and support flock protection ? The choice should evaluate the surfaces,
application methods, speed of action of the chosen products, not least in warm conditions
where surfaces dry within minutes and not hours or the cold season, on its way soon, where
some chemistries ‘struggle’ to perform at low temperatures.
If live IBv vaccines have been used or where there has been an active challenge there is a
higher risk the virus, which survives outside a host for weeks, will transfer from one broiler
flock to another if the cycle is not broken at turnaround……..during the ‘clean out’ biosecurity.
 Virkon® S offers an invested solution for the producers. Proven, current, independent data, to
combat Infectious Bronchitis virus (IBv) today.
 Virkon® S is suitable across all surfaces in a wide range of temperatures , with quick activity
(10 mins) when applied at the recommended volumes ( 300mls per sq metre) and dilution (
1:100) as a part of the terminal/clean out/flock turn around biosecurity program, following the
operators cleaning of the surfaces with a compatible detergent.
 Virkon® S should also be an integral part of the operators continual biosecurity program (at a
dilution 1:100) in foot dips, to reduce the potential cross contamination challenges between
farms and buildings.
 Virkon® S can also be applied to the drinking water (at a dilution of 1:1000) to reduce cross
contamination in the house, not least in the crucial final days leading to the bird slaughter.
