Earth’s Interior InformationCore-Innermost layer
Inner Core-Solid Iron, Has extreme pressure, temperature and density
Outer Core-Liquid metal: Iron and nickel
Mantle-Is solid rock that behaves like plastic. It moves, has intense pressure at bottom layer, convection
currents flow up towards the lithosphere
Asthenosphere-Not liquid, but there is melted rock, carries the lithosphere, moves slowly
Lithosphere-broken into giant plates that fit around the globe like puzzle pieces. The pieces move a
little bit each year. They slide on a somewhat liquid asthenosphere
Crust-Layer of rock that forms Earth’s outer crust, very thin
Oceanic-denser than continental crust, dark colors, ocean floor
Continental-less dense rocks, lighter color rocks
Quick Facts Evidence for Earth’s interior comes from seismic data.
 Earth’s layers are separated by density.
 Radioactive decay in the core is thought to be the cause of heat that provides energy for convection.
 Convection currents in the asthenosphere of the mantle cause the lithosphere plates to move.
 The Earth’s magnetic field is created in the outer core and protects us from solar winds.
