What does the term Renaissance mean? • Renaissance means “rebirth” in French. • We use it to refer to a period of creativity, new ideas and inspirations in Europe The birth of the Renaissance •The renaissance began in the country of Italy. •Two cities that were influential to the growth of the Renaissance were Florence and Venice. •These cities grew wealthy because of their location on Mediterranean trade routes. Humanism •The Renaissance renewed people’s interest in Greek and Roman culture. •This lead to an appreciation of the great things that people good accomplish. •The belief that humans can accomplish great tasks is called Humanism. Art •Art also changed during the renaissance. •New techniques improved the realistic quality of artwork during the Renaissance. •The theory of perspective (making pictures appear three dimensional) contributed to the realism.
