GCSE Islam Key Words
Islam:
Allah:
The world's second largest religion, with about 1.6 billion
followers worldwide. The faith was revealed through Muhammad
as the Prophet of Allah. It also means ‘submission to Allah’.
The Arabic word for God. It is singular, has no plural, and can be
associated with both masculine and feminine characteristics.
Shahadah:
Declaration of faith; one of the five pillars of Islam.
Salah:
Obligatory set prayer five times a day; one of the five pillars of
Islam.
Zakah:
Purification of wealth by payment of annual welfare due; one of
the five pillars of Islam.
Muslim:
A follower of Islam.
Muhammad:
The founder of Islam.
Sawm:
Fasting in the month of Ramadam; one of the five pillars of Islam.
Mosque:
The place where Muslims worship.
Paradise:
Heaven – place of utter bliss.
Imam:
A spiritual leader in Islam.
Blasphemy:
Acting or speaking disrespectfully about Allah.
Halal:
Allowed – often pertaining to food.
Hijab:
A covering cloak worn by Muslim Women.
Minaret:
A tower from which the call to prayer is given.
Qur’an: The Muslim’s holy book; the Revealed Book.
Salat:
A spiritual communication with Allah. Prayer five times a day.
Du’a
The act of personal prayer or supplication.
Pbuh:
‘Peace be upon him’ – said of the prophets
Kalima:
Faith: “There is no God but Allah and Muhammad is his prophet.”
Prophets:
Holy people, through whom Allah has revealed something of
himself.
Wudu:
The act of washing before prayer.
Isa’
the prophet Jesus, worshipped by Christians.
Ramadam:
The ninth month of the Islamic calendar during which fasting is
required from sunrise to sunset.
Shi’ah:
A Muslim who believes Ali should have succeeded Muhammad
(PBUH), because he was Muhammad’s (PBUH) cousin. They form
around 11% of the Muslim population.
Sunni:
A Muslim who believes Abu Bakr should have succeeded
Muhammad (PBUH). They follow the Sunnah or the way of
Muhammad (PBUH). They form around 89% of the Muslim
population
Five pillars of Islam:
Hajj:
Five obligatory practices Muslims must follow: Shahadah,
Salah, zakah, sawm and Hajj.
An annual pilgrimage to Mecca which every Muslim should aim to
make as long as health and wealth allow; one of the five pillars of
Islam.
