KS2 Unit 11, Lesson 2: The five Pillars of Islam
Context: In this lesson (or pair of lessons) Children will be introduced to the origins of Islam and the
importance of submission.
Overview: To learn what submission means for a Muslim. To learn what the five pillars of Islam are.
Shahadah: sincerely reciting the Muslim profession of faith. Salat: performing ritual prayers in the proper
way five times each day. Zakat: paying an alms (or charity) tax to benefit the poor and the needy. Sawm:
fasting during the month of Ramadan. Hajj: pilgrimage to Mecca.
Essential core:
Key belief – Islam (Submission to the will of Allah). Pupils should know and understand:
Know that Islam means “Submission (to the will of Allah)” and the word Muslims means someone who
has willingly submitted themselves to Allah.
Understand that praying 5 times a day, which is prescribed in the Qur’an, is one way Muslims submit to
the will of Allah. They do this by:
Being constantly reminded of Allah throughout the day, reminds them for what is important in their life
and helps them straying from the path
The sujud position (prostration) reflects Muslim submission as a physical act.
Salah can take place anywhere, as God created everything.
Raise and suggest answers to relevant questions in response to what they have learnt about the Islamic
belief in submitting to the will of Allah and the practice of Salah.
Attempt to support their answers using reasons and/or information

BUILD UP
In small groups give the attached diamond nines activity for the pupils to sort in the order of importance
to a Moslem. Discuss their conclusions, and the reasons for their choices, based on what they have
learned so far about the Muslim faith.
CELEBRATE: Choose one of the 5 pillars and design a poster for it.Say why it is a good thing to do. What
should people do to follow this pillar? Any images that you link to this pillar?
PLENARY & FORMATIVE ASSESSMENT:
How do the 5 pillars guide a Muslim’s life? What “pillars” do I have that support my own life?
Which is the most important pillar to a Muslim?
An additional task - The five pillars have different time scales – every moment, 5 times a day, when
their money comes in, one month a year and once in a lifetime. Ask pupils to compare Muslim
intentions for life and their own.
