When two young boys get into an altercation at a public park, their parents meet to discuss the event in a calm and rational manner…But as the evening progresses (and the rum is drunk), diplomatic civility makes way for all out conflict, leaving liberal principles, expensive flowers and half-digested food in tatters on the floor. Winner of the Tony Award for Best New Play and Olivier Award for Best Comedy (2009), God of Carnage is a brutally entertaining and stingingly comic character study of middle class pretence and savage parental instinct. Directed by Gareth Nicholls Designed by Karen Tennent Tron Theatre Company presents THE LYING KIND By Anthony Neilson Previews: Thu 6 July, 7.45pm, £8 Fri 7 – Sat 22 July, £10-£19 Matinee Sat 15 July, £14 (£10) BSL & AD Sat 15 July, 2.30pm CAP Sat 15 July, 7.45pm Main Auditorium Constables Blunt and Gobbel have one last duty to fulfil before they clock off on Christmas Eve: to tell the old couple at number 58 some terrible, terrible news. But what if the shock is too much for the frail pair to bear? Maybe they’d be better off not knowing. And maybe the hapless constables would be better off if they hadn’t got themselves stuck in the middle of a lynching organized by a group of anti-paedophile vigilantes. Multiple misunderstandings, a stray Chihuahua and an apparently transvestite vicar contribute to the escalating mayhem in Anthony Neilson’s hilarious pitch black farce which is being revised for this new Tron Theatre Company production. Written by Anthony Neilson Directed by Andy Arnold Tamasha and The Belgrade Theatre in association with Pilot Theatre present MADE IN INDIA Scottish premiere Wed 8 – Sat 11 Feb, 7.45pm £10-£16 Main Auditorium In a surrogacy clinic in Gujarat, three women meet. Londoner Eva is in motherhood’s last chance saloon. For village girl Aditi, surrogacy is a lifeline out of poverty. For clinic owner and businesswoman Dr Gupta, it’s all just another transaction. But with the backdrop of profound global forces, can it possibly remain that simple? A thrilling new play about motherhood and blood ties, between women and across nations, in a brave new world. Written by Satinder Chohan Directed by Katie Posner Supported by Arts Council England Red Bridge Arts & Traverse Theatre Company present BLACK BEAUTY Tue 14 Feb, 2pm & 7pm £10 (Family of 3 £27, Family of 4 £36) Main Auditorium From the cosy horsebox they call home, Andy and Andy take the bit firmly between their teeth and tell the classic tale of Black Beauty as you've never seen it before. Saddle up, jump on and gallop headlong into a story where loneliness gives way to hope, friends become heroes, and courage saves the day. Blending storytelling, music and puppetry, this vibrant re-telling of Black Beauty offers fun and adventure for fans of the book, classic TV show and those brand new to the tale. Performed by Andy Manley (White, Mikey & Addie) and Andy Cannon (Tales of a Grandson, Labyrinth), with design by Shona Reppe (White, Huff). Suitable for 6yrs+ Created by Andy Manley, Andy Cannon & Shona Reppe Supported by Creative Scotland and City of Edinburgh Council Fair Pley Ltd presents THE CAUSE OF THUNDER Thu 16 – Sat 18 Feb, 7.45pm £10-£16 Main Auditorium It’s two years after the referendum, and Bob Cunningham has stuff on his mind: whether or not to take early retirement; politics, of course, and what to do about the No vote, Brexit, Corbyn, the refugee crisis… that weird thing about rising into the heavens… and not forgetting the letter from Ethel, his ex. As he confronts retirement and the onset of old age, is his life’s work done? Is he finished? Can he come to terms with his, and his country’s past and future? ‘Hayman gives a blistering performance.’ Broadway Baby on The Pitiless Storm Written by Chris Dolan Directed by David Hayman Jnr Performed by David Hayman Show and Tell present HEADS UP Wed 22 Feb, 7.45pm £14 (£10) Main Auditorium A city. Just like this. Right now. A teenage girl boils up in rage in a toilet cubicle. A finance worker preaches doom in a busy train station. An absurd coke-addled celebrity races through town on a mission. A paranoid stoner stares blankly at the endless disasters on the TV news. In just one moment, all their worlds will end. Multi award-winner Kieran Hurley weaves a picture of a familiar city at its moment of destruction, asking what would we do if we found ourselves at the end of our world as we know it. ‘Acutely observed yet ferociously powerful storytelling… an absolute highlight of the Edinburgh Fringe' ★★★★ The Independent Written and performed by Kieran Hurley Directed by Julia Taudevin and Alex Swift Part of TAKE ME SOMEWHERE, a new citywide festival of contemporary performance that builds on the legacy of The Arches arts programme. Julia Taudevin with Kim Moore and Susan Bear & Julie Eisenstein (Tuff Love) present BLOW OFF Thu 23 Feb, 7.45pm £14 (£10) Main Auditorium This fierce and playful feminist work explores the psychology of extremism with haunting melodies and progressive punk riffs in an explosive piece of guerilla-gig-theatre. ‘Half Pixies-style rock gig, half angry spoken word, it’s about sexual stereotyping, capitalist alienation and getting your voice heard.’ The Scotsman I’m not going to tell you her hair colour. Her skin colour. Whether she’s got an almond or a heart shaped face. All you need to know, right now, is that she is a person. Walking up a street. A street that you know. A street we all know. Towards a giant, glistening tower. A giant, glistening shaft. A shaft that you know. A shaft we all know. Created, written and performed by Julia Taudevin Music created and performed by Kim Moore with Julie Eisenstein and Susan Bear (Tuff Love) Part of TAKE ME SOMEWHERE, a new citywide festival of contemporary performance that builds on the legacy of The Arches arts programme. Tron Theatre Company presents NOWHERE Sat 25 Feb, 7.45pm £10 Main Auditorium A promenade show – for one night only. In the fading memory of his Arches roots, Andy Arnold and his troupe will take guests on an absurd journey down corridors and up stairwells and into backstage passages to meet strange characters reciting even stranger stories. This theatrical experience, a nod to Beckett, existentialism, surrealism, with a bit of Dada for good measure, will show you parts of the Tron and parts of yourselves you may never have seen before. Part of TAKE ME SOMEWHERE, a new citywide festival of contemporary performance that builds on the legacy of The Arches arts programme. Scottish Theatre Producers presents EXPENSIVE SHIT Thu 30 Mar – Sat 1 Apr, 7.45pm £10-£16 Main Auditorium 'The country change, the city change, the people dem think they change, but I tell you dem shit the same. The story of a Nigerian nightclub toilet attendant, working in the toilets of a fictional club based on the Shimmy Club in Glasgow. He’s in prison awaiting trial. But he can’t quite remember why. During one riveting hour we witness him piece together his complex descent from passionate love to shame and devastation. Just beneath the surface of everyday life there’s complete anarchy lying in wait. Coriolanus Vanishes is a contemporary tragedy written and performed by David Leddy, “maverick” (Guardian), “iconoclast” (List) and “genius” (Scotsman). Exploring how childhood memories can besiege adult relationships, it combines the moral ambiguity of the arms trade with the challenges of adopting an abused child. Sometimes your friends are worse than your enemies, and sometimes you’re the worst of all. What happens then? Written and performed by David Leddy Supported by Creative Scotland Blue Raincoat Theatre Company presents SHACKLETON UK & Scottish Premiere Wed 14 - Sat 17 June, 7.45pm £10-£16 Main Auditorium Men wanted for hazardous journey. In the Scottish and UK premiere, Ireland’s longest running theatre ensemble, Blue Raincoat Theatre Company, return to the Tron to perform Shackleton the story of, and about, Endurance on the Antartic’s icy Weddell Sea. ‘Blue Raincoat’s polar production seeks a bigger picture beyond biography. This epic ballad lies somewhere between a Grimm’s fairytale, an absurdist ghost story and a parent’s guide on how not to bring up children. This unique solo storytelling performance is told in a rich and saucy Scots dialect with physical verve, a wee dram of whisky to oil the way and an original musical score that rolls in like mist over the hills. ‘A tour de force brawly spoken!’ ***** Edinburgh Guide Written & performed by Sarah Cameron Directed by Suzy Willson ZENDEH present TRANSIT Thu 9 – Sat 11 March, 8pm CAP + post show discussions £10 (£7.50) Changing House The weight of this sad time we must obey; Speak what we feel, not what we ought to say. King Lear by William Shakespeare For the first time in ten years Darya, and her father, Roger, meet in the transit lounge of Schiphol Airport, Amsterdam. He is a professor of music, blinded by privilege, with a narrow view of the political landscape. As they reach out to one another, an event a world away impacts their reconciliation.
