Located in Glasgow’s Merchant City, the Tron consists of a 230 seat auditorium, a
75 capacity studio/rehearsal space, dressing rooms, a ‘get-in’ area, three bars, a box
office and office accommodation for administration and production staff.
The Tron is both a producing and receiving theatre. We to produce four Tron
Theatre Company shows a year as well as to deliver a busy performance
programme of visiting work.

The main objectives of the role are:

To organise and manage the technical, physical and human resources of the
Tron’s production department to the highest standards, in order to achieve
the artistic aims of the organisation.

To manage production expenditure within the agreed budgets and, where
appropriate, make savings.

To maintain and develop the technical facilities of the Tron in conjunction with
the technical manager.

To participate as a member of the senior management team in the day to day
operation of the organisation, as well as its medium to long-term
development.
The main responsibilities of the role:
Human Resource Management

The recruitment, in consultation with the Artistic Director, General Manager
and Technical Manager, of all production staff, including casuals and
freelance theatre workers.
Lead and manage the production department with line management
responsibility for the Stage Manager and Technical Manager. The technical
manager will have day to day operational responsibility for the technicians but the
production manager will have overall responsibility for all the staff (and
contracted staff) in the production department to include grievance and
disciplinary matters, checking and authorisation of production staff timesheets,
TOIL and holiday requests.

Alongside the technical manager, undertake annual appraisals and ensure
the professional development needs of the production department staff are
met.
Health and Safety

Manage all aspects of Health & Safety, with respect to the production
department, ensuring all productions and working practices meet fire, health
& safety and licensing regulations including the safe deployment of all
equipment, pyrotechnics and effects.

Manage the Health & Safety of the public in so far as how the stage and
technical activity affects the safety of the building and access to escape
routes and emergency lighting.

Set and maintain a high standard of housekeeping within production areas
including the get-in area, workshop, stage and control room

Stay abreast of Health & Safety legislation, highlighting any relevant changes
to the production department and the General Manager.

Overall responsibility for completion of and approval of risk assessments for
all departmental risk assessments for the building, equipment and
productions (in-house and visiting).
In-house Production

The observation of all relevant licensing requirements including obtaining and
holding any permissions for use of firearms, pyrotechnics and the like.

Ensuring the timeous and economic construction and making of sets,
costumes, props, etc as agreed with the creative team

Managing the integration of work between directors, designers, costume
designers, lighting designers, sound designers and the production team.

Maintaining an overview and monitoring of fit ups, ensuring that deadlines are
met.
Planning, scheduling and budgeting

Forward planning, scheduling and preparation for productions including
rehearsals, set construction, props, costumes and production schedules for
all Tron Theatre Company productions and co-productions

Manage all necessary arrangements for touring, including liaison with venue
production teams. .

Liaison with visiting company managements regarding their technical and
access requirements before and during their visit to the Tron, ensuring they
receive the best possible experience

Liaising with other companies with respect to co-productions.

Providing input and feedback to Artistic Director regarding programming
scheduling implications

Providing input when contracting creatives and cast.

Assist in the preparation of production budgets and advise the General
Manager on the accuracy of costings and the ongoing variances between
actual expenditure and budget figures.

Management of the departmental budget
Technical & Physical Resource Management

The establishment of a planned maintenance regime for all production
equipment with a view to safety, efficiency and economy. Making
recommendations to the General Manager regarding equipment repair,
renewal and purchase.

Ensure the safekeeping and security, and maintain accurate records of, all
Tron equipment, tools, props, costumes and sets stored within the Tron and
external storage locations

Chair all production meetings for all Tron Theatre Company productions.

Being a key holder for the building and participating in an on-call system
This list of responsibilities is not exhaustive and the employee may be required to
perform duties outside of this as operationally required and at the discretion of the
Artistic Director and General Manager.

ABOUT THE TRON
The Tron is one of Scotland’s leading producing and presenting theatres, set
in the heart of Glasgow, housing performance spaces (Main House, Changing
House and Victorian Bar) and rehearsal spaces, offices, a dedicated
Participation space and a cafe/bar operation. It is the home of Tron Theatre
Company which stages its own productions alongside co-productions and
collaborations with other theatre companies. The Tron presents visiting
companies’ work as part of its annual programme. A highlight of the year is
The Tron’s annual festival, Mayfesto. Through the support of The Tron’s
experienced team of staff, new and emergent artists are able to develop work
and experiment with theatre forms.
In addition to the annual; programme of productions presented The Tron
delivers an extensive Participation programme which is delivered through the
Education & Outreach department. The Participation programme takes place
at The Tron and in the community, engaging with participants of all ages and
abilities in arts activities developing practical skills and social skills which
enables individuals to become confident, interested and creative learners.
The Education & Outreach department also present productions on the Main
Stage and Changing House spaces involving the different regular groups
which it engages with. Each Christmas the Education & Outreach department
successfully works with a professional creative team to devise a piece of work
targeting 3 to 6 year olds to complement the annual pantomime in the main
space, which Tron Theatre Company produces.
In addition to the artistic offering The Tron contributes to the cultural
landscape of the city through providing a social space for artists, audiences
and participants to meet within its cafe/bar spaces.
The Tron is located within the cultural quarter of Glasgow’s Merchant City,
which also is home to Trongate 103, The Briggait, Glasgow’s City Halls and
Frutimarket and a number of independently owned visual art galleries. The
building is a key venue for a number of the Festivals taking place throughout
the year: Celtic Connections; Glasgow International Comedy Festival;
Scottish Refugee Week; and Glasgay!.
THE PEOPLE
The Artistic Director/Chief Executive leads a core team across both Tron
Theatre Limited and Tron Catering Limited. The organisation requires
additional staff to be employed on a part-time and casual basis to cover the
day to day operations of the building (cleaning, bar and catering, front of
house, production and box office staff). A number of freelance creative
practitioners and actors are employed throughout the year for Tron Theatre
Company productions and Participation projects and performances.
The organisation is governed by a Board of Directors which meets 4 times a
year. The Board members are legally responsible for agreeing (alongside
The Tron’s Executive Team) strategy and policy for the organisation. In
addition to these quarterly meetings a Finance & Operations Sub Committee
meet to look more closely at budgets and operational issues. The skills set of
the Board is a benefit as it enables Directors to support specific members of
the management team through meetings where they bring their expertise to
the table to contribute to the development of the organisation. The Directors

In 2008, Andy Arnold, formally Founder and Artistic Director of The Arches
(another arts venues in Glasgow) was appointed to the post of Artistic
Director at The Tron. At that time he made a commitment to increase the
range and output of Tron Theatre Company productions, to turn the building
into a thriving and energetic theatrical powerhouse and to open up The Tron
as a key resource to the Scottish theatre community.
WHAT WE DO
Since Andy’s tenure began The Tron has significantly developed relationships
with national and international theatre companies resulting in the creation and
presentation of successful co-productions. In addition to these coproductions and Tron Theatre Company productions the organisation has:
focused on supporting young and non-building based Scottish theatre
companies; programmed a diverse quality visiting programme of work; and
run a Participation programme which complements The Tron’s programme of
performance. All this artistic activity is underpinned by the organisation
striving to maximise its self-generated income streams through ticket sales,
ancilliary sales (programmes, ice cream, merchandise), the covenant from
Tron Catering Limited and Business Development activities (fundraising,
donations, corporate sponsorship, membership schemes). Income
generation takes place through direct sales channels but there is an
additional indirect income generation through the Production department
recharges for extra technical resources required by the visiting companies.
TERMS & CONDITIONS
Salary: Commensurate with experience
Hours: 43 hours per week, Monday to Saturday. Any hours worked on a
Sunday will be subject to Time of in Lieu (TOIL)
