Matthew Huelsenbeck
Marine Scientist
Matthew (Matt) Huelsenbeck is a marine scientist at Oceana, the largest international advocacy group
working solely to protect the world’s oceans. Since 2010, Huelsenbeck has supported Oceana’s Climate
and Energy campaign, where he studies the impacts of pollution on marine life and society as they relate
to offshore drilling, climate change and ocean acidification.
Prior to working at Oceana, Huelsenbeck was a research associate at Scripps Institution of
Oceanography, where he focused on the impacts of ocean acidification on fish larvae.
Huelsenbeck has an interdisciplinary background in marine science and policy, and is the author of two
Oceana reports; Ocean Acidification: The Untold Stories (2010) and Ocean-Based Food Security
Threatened in a High CO2 World (2012).
Huelsenbeck earned a Master’s degree in Marine Biodiversity and Conservation from Scripps Institution
of Oceanography at the University of California, San Diego. He has an undergraduate degree in
Environmental Studies from Miami University, Ohio.
