BELL ACTIVITY • Answer these questions in your journal. Be ready to share with the class. – How many of you have heard about someone who “waited too late” to go to the doctor? – What do you think that means? – With which diseases could someone wait too long and not get the care needed to save their lives? PRIMARY PREVENTION • Primary prevention is the stage in which an individual eats nutritiously, exercise regularly, and avoid harmful substances such as tobacco. SECONDARY CONTROL • This stage is where an individual uses early detection methods such as medical exams and self-examinations. TERTIARY • This phase is when an individual is in the treatment stage. WHERE ARE YOU? • This activity we are going to see if we can distinguish between practices that are primary prevention, early detection, and treatment. DO IT NOW! EARLY DETECTION CAN SAVE LIVES The American Cancer Society believes that early • detection examinations and tests can help save lives and reduce suffering from cancers of the: • • • • • • • • Breast Colon Rectum Cervix Prostate Testis (testicles) Oral cavity (mouth) Skin AMERICAN CANCER SOCIETY’S 7 WARNING SIGNS OF CANCER • Change in bowel or bladder habits • A sore that does not heal • Unusual bleeding or discharge • Thickening or lump in breast or elsewhere • Indigestion or difficulty in swallowing • Obvious change in wart or mole • Nagging cough or hoarseness • CANCER PREVENTION ACTIVITY Each table will work on a particular topic. Your job is to gather all information about your topic. You will be the expert on your topic and must teach the information to the class. You can use any method to get the information to the class be creative! CLOSURE ACTIVITY • Today we discussed the importance of prevention and early detection. Each of you will be given a slip of paper in which a student your age stated in regards to our lesson. How would you respond to the statement based on what you learned in class. Once you have given your response put your name on the back of the slip and place in the box by the file folders.
