documentary titled ‘We feed the world’ (95 min - subtitles) which investigates food and
globalisation, fishermen and farmers, drivers and high-powered corporate executives, the
flow of goods and cash, a film about scarcity amid plenty. Desert consists of the spoof
Matrix animation titled ‘Meatrix’ (5 min) where Moothius and Leo discover the impacts of
factory farming.

and Switzerland, he will talk about how Australia is placed to take advantage of this business
opportunity. Arron would like to see “Australian businesses to be at the forefront of this
global phenomenon to secure the nation as an environmental knowledge and technology
broker in a post manufacturing economy”.

difference. Past Melbourne Sustainability Drinks have been attended by people ranging from
Chairman/CEO, mid level managers in various industries (finance, government, retail,
mining and other), renewable energy executives, Consultants from various firms, academics
and others through to passionate students from the Future Sustainability Leaders programme.
The philosophy behind this cafe is to only source their products from within 100 miles of
their location, thus reducing the “green miles” associated with greenhouse gas transport
emissions. They only use fresh seasonal produce and also practice sustainability principles
within their cafe (water/energy and much more). The cafe is always happy to hear ideas and
suggestions from their customers or other community stakeholders, as to how to improve
their performance in this area.

The Eastern Transport Coalition (ETC) is holding a major public transport summit on
the
to discuss what changes we need to accommodate for the increase in public transport
patronage in our area, now and in the future.
The summit will feature keynote speaker

Professor Peter Newman, Professor of Sustainability, Curtin University. Professor
Newman is a renowned West Australian academic and planner who is credited with
coining the term ‘automobile dependence’ — an expression describing the creation
of cities reliant on cars.
The Summit will also hear from

Professor Graham Currie, Monash University Chair of Public Transport and

Peter Daly, Chief Engineer from the RACV.

ETC Chairperson Cr Mick Van De Vreede said that following the Eddington study it was
clear that the State Government needed a transport plan for the rest of Melbourne and in
particular the eastern suburbs.
“We intend to use the summit to put together the basic requirements of a transport plan for
the eastern suburbs. We call on anyone who has an interest in improving public transport to
attend the meeting or send us their ideas.
“It is clear that we need better public transport in Melbourne’s east — and we need it now!
It’s the smart answer to help local families cope with the rapidly escalating petrol prices and
climate change.
“If you can’t make it to the summit you can send us your ideas on [email protected]
“Now is the right time to make your voice heard in the State Government’s future transport
plans for Melbourne,” Cr Van De Vreede concluded.

'A DRIFTING COCONUT: THE STORY OF THE CARTERET ISLANDERS',
Radio National documentary that exposes new Global Warming theory and the effect of
Climate Change on the Western Pacific region.
In the radio feature 'A Drifting Coconut: The story of the Carteret Islanders', world specialist
on oceans, Dr. John Hunter, proposes a possible new theory on why the islands are
disappearing. Dr. Hunter claims that the islands may be rapidly eroding away due changes
in the El Nino cycle, possibly caused by Climate Change. His new theory is backed up by
first-hand accounts by the islanders and a visitor to the islands,
co-producer of the documentary, Thomas Parkinson.
Ursula Rakova, who is a land guardian from the matrilineal Carteret Islands is currently
touring Australia talking about the situation for the Carteret Islanders. Faced with the
scientific reality that her islands are eroding into the sea she is helping to organise a new
homeland for the entire population of the atoll in Bougainville.

These meetings are for people interested in taking part in the Beyond Zero Emissions
campaign. We begin with a report on any action that has been taken, new information, and
any progress made, and finish with a discussion on what activities, events and tasks are
coming up and what needs to be done.
The meetings are a good introduction to our organisation and the campaign, with new people
given a separate briefing at the start of the meeting. Once people have found a role that they

Commissioner Singh will speak about the key issues that connect Australia and India energy security, climate change, education, migration, sports and culture.
High Commissioner Singh joined the Indian Foreign Service in 1976 with secretarial
postings to Bonn, Bangladesh and Paris. From 1997 - 2000, she served with the Embassy of
India as representative to the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and
the Pacific in Bangkok. High Commissioner Singh was then posted to Milan as Consul
General of India before being appointed Joint Secretary, Ministry of External Affairs, New
Delhi 2004 - 2007.

NATIONAL TREE DAY - Australia’s biggest community tree planting event.
National Tree Day is an Australian environmental initiative aimed at promoting community
planting of native trees and shrubs. It is organised by Planet Ark in association with Toyota.
Together with Toyota Dealers, people from all walks of life in communities across the
country, come together to plant trees to repair, revegetate and restore Australia’s landscape.

in your area.

NATIONAL TREE DAY - Gronn Street East Reservoir Darebin Creek Community

Are you interested in your local East Reservoir environment or the Darebin Creek? This is an
exciting project that will restore some of the River Red Gum woodlands at Darebin Creek in
East Reservoir. Community members are invited to come along and assist to plant local
native plants along the edge of the Darebin Creek - opposite Bundoora Park. Come along by
bike and see this beautiful bushland area, watch the creek flow, listen to the local birds and
bugs.

FILM SCREENING – THE THIN GREEN LINE
This is the story of Park Rangers. A front line story of the human spirit fighting to save
what is precious and rare. A story about the future, inspired by hundreds of Park
Rangers from around the world, working on the frontline of conservation.
Sean Willmore, Park Ranger from Warringine Park in Victoria, Australia sold his car and
remortgaged his house 3 times to make this film. In 2003 he met his ranger colleagues from
across the globe at an International Park Rangers Congress at Wilson's Promontory National
Park, near Melbourne. It was here that he developed his vision to document and bring to the
wider community the real picture behind the postcards of international parks and reserves.

The selfless commitment of individuals who face the real prospect of death from poachers,
wild creatures and other challenges. By filming rangers at work he wanted to open up a
different way of looking at and communicating the wonders of our world and the daily
threats to its very survival.
Sean spent most of 2004 filming the lives and stories of rangers on 6 continents and 19
countries. There were some incredible experiences: volcanoes, ascents by horseback in Chile
and Argentina, a charging elephant in South Africa, drowning rivers in Costa Rica, Mountain
Gorilla protection in volatile Virungas of Uganda, helicopter rescues in the Rockies,
dangerous anti-poaching patrols and chases in South Africa, Galapagos, Uganda and India,
and violent threats by rebel soldiers, antagonistic poaching communities, and protesting
fisherman. Sean counts himself lucky to be alive.
These experiences set the tone for the life stories and challenges facing the professional Park
Ranger.
Filming the journey inspired Sean to deepen his belief in the devoted men and women who
sometimes give their lives for their devotion to nature, people and conservation. The
"Rangers' heart" helps them cope with corruption, poor re-sourcing, ignorance, politics and
greed.
This documentary moves away from the cute, cuddly or dangerous animals seen in
traditional wildlife documentaries. The animals themselves become the backdrop for the
human face of conservation.
The aim of the film is to expose The Thin Green Line in the hope that others will join Park
Rangers to save what is endangered Each Ranger has threads to add to the story, from
different locations, personal histories, cultural influences, and political environments. The
making of this film has helped to unify rangers from many diverse backgrounds and cultures
around the globe, all with the same inspiring goal:
TO TRY AND SAVE THE PLANET.
It may be only a small piece of a large jigsaw puzzle that needs putting together for a
sustainable planet, but "The Thin Green Line", set to contemporary, emotional and heart
pounding music, is an important document for rangers and the communities worldwide. It’s
not up to Rangers alone to protect what is priceless:
WE ALL NEED TO WORK TOGETHER FOR A SUSTAINABLE FUTURE.
This is a totally non-profit venture. All profits from the sale of this documentary will be
returned to support Rangers on the frontline, including the International Ranger Dependency
Fund, which supports the families of committed rangers who have lost their lives, or those
rangers who have been severely injured in the line of duty.
Any surplus funds to this will be directed to positive Ranger / conservation projects. The
project has already raised over AUD $10,000 to support Rangers globally.
