“I decided that I wanted to do something
completely different from my work in the
commercial industry. Winchester gave me
that choice as it offered so many interesting
combinations.
“Coming to the Open Day was an eye-opener
because I had just come to hear about the
English degree but while I was here I saw what
Sociology had to offer and I decided that I
would apply to do both.
“So far the course has exceeded my
expectations – I really enjoy the variety of
teaching formats used in Sociology – there
is a mix of lecture, seminar, group work,
debates and presentations which all help to
enhance the learning process. The module on
the Sociology of Family has been particularly
interesting – it has stimulated a lot of
discussion in class because it is personal and
emotive as everyone has their own ideas about
families.
“As a mature student, I was initially worried
that coming to university would be daunting
but Winchester is such a friendly place – I have
friends of all ages and I have developed a strong
support network. Eventually I would like to
perhaps teach at secondary level or post-16,
maybe even go into research but right now I am
just enjoying the whole experience of university
life.”
