Notes
• On Page 37– You will take notes over
the following PowerPoint. The phrases
in red need to be copied down. And
write down any excess information you
feel is important.
Essential Question
PG 37
How do animal systems interact to
regulate the body?
Standard
B.10A - describe the interactions that occur among systems
that perform the functions of regulation, nutrient
absorption, reproduction, and defense from injury or illness
in animals
SYSTEMS INVOLVED

OF THIS
Endocrine
Skeletal
Muscular
SKELETAL SYSTEM
• Main Parts:
–Bones
–Joints
–Ligaments (join bone to bone)
–Tendons (join muscle to bone)
–Cartilage
SKELETAL SYSTEM
• Main Functions:
–Gives support & structure
–Protects internal organs
–Helps you move
MUSCULAR SYSTEM
• Main Parts:
–Smooth muscle
• involuntary movement
–Cardiac (heart) muscle
• involuntary movement
–Skeletal muscle
• voluntary movement
MUSCULAR SYSTEM
• Main Function:
–Moves your limbs & body
–Moves food through the digestive tract
–Pumps the blood
–Constricts and dilates blood vessels to increase or
decrease blood flow
NERVOUS & ENDOCRINE SYSTEMS
• Function together to regulate the body through
electrical & chemical signals
Wired
Internet
Wireless (Wifi)
Internet
NERVOUS SYSTEM
• Main Parts:
–Brain
–Spinal cord
–Neurons (nerve cells)
–Sensory organs
• How It Works:
–“Wired”
–Chemical signals
transmitted
between nerve cells or receptors turn
into electrical impulses that travel along
the neuron
–Quick, almost instant responses
• Reflexes happen before your brain knows
what’s going on
–Short-term effects
Path of a Reflex
A sensory neuron
Carries the impulse
To the spinal cord
Where the impulse
Is immediately
Passed back through
A motor neuron to
Produce a response!
Why is the brain
bypassed?
ENDOCRINE SYSTEM
• Main Parts:
–Glands
–Hormones
ENDOCRINE SYSTEM
• How It Works:
–“Wireless”
–Chemical signals (hormones) sent
anywhere in the body
• Sent through the bloodstream
–Slow-acting responses
–Long-term effects
ENDOCRINE SYSTEM
Consists of:
Endocrine glands
Release hormones into
the bloodstream.
Hormones are chemicals
released in one part of the
body that travel through
the bloodstream and
affect the activities of cells
in other parts of the body.
Gland
Function
Thyroid
Body’s metabolism
Pancreas
Keep the level of glucose in the blood stable.
Pituatary
Secretes hormones that directly regulate many
body functions and controls functions of other
glands.
Adrenal
Releases Adrenaline in the body that helps
prepare for and deal with stress.
Ovaries
Found in women that produce eggs.
Also secrete estrogen and progesterone, which
control ovulation and menstruation.
Testes
Found in men that produces sperm.
Also secrete Testosterone to give the body its
masculine characteristics.
The “Master Gland!”
The
The pituitary gland,
located in the brain,
is an important link
between the
endocrine and
nervous systems. It
is called the master
gland because it
produces hormones
that control other
glands.
DEBRIEF:
Quickwrite in Bellwork Journal:
Explain how the four systems
(Nervous, Endocrine, Muscular, and
Skeletal) work together to prevent
injury if you touch a hot stove.
