Friends of The Chico State Herbarium — California State University, Chico Soils, Landforms, and Vegetation of Bidwell Park April 2, 2011 Bidwell Park provides a great outdoor classroom to explore the relationships between landform, soils, and the vegetation occurring on those soils. The geological processes that shape the land and create soil can be revealed by walking through this dramatic landscape. Differences in vegetation often correspond to differences in soil characteristics. Andrew Conlin will once again lead a 2 part field tour in Bidwell Park. The first part will be an approximately 1 hour mild uphill hike, and will consist of looking at the big picture of the local area by observing soils and landforms of the Sacramento Valley and Cascade foothills. This popular excursion will provide context to local soils, geology, geomorphology, and vegetation. The talk will include a basic introduction to soils and soil survey data for the more advanced. The second part will be approximately 3 hours and consist of a 2-3 mile walk from Horseshoe Lake to Bear Hole along the bottom of Big Chico Creek Canyon. Soils and landforms created by Big Chico Creek will be observed and discussed in relation to vegetation, geology, and stream processes. The group will break for lunch along Iron Canyon above Bear Hole before resuming the tour back to the parking lot. For a complete full-page version of this diagram, with workshop routes of travel added click here This year’s tour will include new handouts for each participant with a detailed soils map of the tour area and a modified route that comprehensively displays the cross section of the Big Chico Creek Canyon. Bring a bag lunch and be prepared for a variety of conditions. Andrew Conlin has worked as a Soil Scientist for the Natural Resource Conservation Service for over 20 years. He coauthored the recently completed Soil Survey of Butte County and has also recently completed a Soil Survey of Lassen Volcanic National Park. The workshop will meet Saturday, April 2, 2011, from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Meet in Chico’s Upper Bidwell Park Parking Lot B (by the Easter cross). The registration fee is $35.00 per person (kids under 12 free when accompanied by an adult). Please register in advance; class size is limited to 30 participants (class cancelled without at least 8 participants).
