The visualization covers the period June 2005 to December 2007 and is based on a
synthesis of a numerical model with observational data, created by a NASA project
called Estimating the Circulation and Climate of the Ocean, or ECCO for short. ECCO
is a joint project between the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and NASA's Jet
Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif.
ECCO uses advanced mathematical tools to combine observations with the MIT
numerical ocean model to obtain realistic descriptions of how ocean circulation
evolves over time.

Bays and Headlands are often found on the same coastline.
A bay is surrounded by land on three sides, whereas a headland is surrounded by
water on three sides. Headlands are normally characterized by high, breaking
waves, rocky shores, intense erosion and steep sea cliffs. The Bay of Fundy is
known for its high tidal range. The quest for World tidal dominance has led to a
rivalry between the Canadian Minas Basin in the Bay of Fundy and the Leaf Basin
in Ungava Bay, (which is in the Artic Ocean north of Quebec, Canada),
over which body of water lays claim to the highest tides in the world,
with supporters in each region claiming the record.
The Canadian Hydrographic Service finally declared it a statistical tie, with
measurements of a 16.8 meter (55.1 feet) tidal range in Leaf Basin for Ungava Bay
and 17 meters (55.8 feet) at Burntcoat Head in the Bay of Fundy. The Bay of
Fundy lies in a rift valley called the Fundy Basin; as the rift began to separate from
mainland North America, volcanic activity occurred, forming volcanoes and flood
basalts These flood basalts poured out over the landscape, covering much of
southern Nova Scotia. Sections of the flood basalts have been eroded away, but still
form a basaltic mountain range known as North Mountain.
As a result, much of the basin floor is made of tholeiitic basaltswhich gives the
floor it’s brown color. The rift valley eventually failed (see aulacogen) as the MidAtlantic Ridge continued to separate North America, Europe, and Africa.

.
A Gulf in geography is a large bay that is an arm of an ocean or a sea. Bays also
may exist as an inlet in a lake or pond.
A large bay may be called a gulf, a sea, a sound, or a bight.
A cove is a circular or oval coastal inlet with a narrow entrance; some coves may
also be referred to as bays. Gulfs normally connect directly with oceans or seas,
but also may connect with other bodies of water.
The Persian Gulf itself connects with the river delta of Shatt al-Arab, which carries
the waters of the Euphrates and the Tigris rivers on the West and the Gulf of Oman
on the East. It is an inland sea of some 251,000 km² and a length of 989 kilometers.
It is 56 kilometers wide at its narrowest, in the Strait of Hormuz. The waters are
overall very shallow, with a maximum depth of 90 meters and an average depth of
50 meters.

Straits
A strait or straits is a narrow, typically navigable channel of water that connects
two larger, navigable bodies of water. It most commonly refers to a channel of
water that lies between two land masses, but it may also refer to a navigable
channel through a body of water that is otherwise not navigable, for example
because it is too shallow, or because it contains an unnavigable reef or archipelago.
e.g. (Strait of Gibraltar, Dover Strait, Strait of Hormuz)
Sounds
In geography a sound or seaway is a large sea or ocean inlet larger than a bay,
deeper than a bight, and wider than a fjord; or it may be defined as a narrow sea or
ocean channel between two bodies of land (see also strait).
e.g. Long Island Sound separates Long Island from the coast of Connecticut,
Marlborough Sounds in New Zealand.

Inlets & Channels
An inlet is a narrow body of water between islands or a link leading inland from a
larger body of water, often leading to an enclosed body of water, such as a sound,
bay, lagoon or marsh. In sea coasts an inlet usually refers to the actual connection
between a bay and the ocean and is often called an "entrance" or a recession in the
shore of a sea, lake or river. A certain kind of inlet created by glaciation is called a
fjord, Some fjord-type inlets are also called sounds.
Other inlets are designated as Canals or Channels.
e.g. Lynn Canal, Hood Canal, and Dean Channel, Douglas Channel, and the
North Sea Canal to Amsterdam North _Sea_Canal .
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Douglas_Channel
Other synonyms for Inlet are:
basin, bay, bayou, bight, canal, channel, cove, creek, delta, entrance, estuary, firth,
fjord, gulf, harbor, ingress, loch, narrows, passage, slew, slough, sound, and strait.

Ocean Trenches
A deep-sea trench is a narrow, elongate, v-shaped Depression in the ocean floor. Trenches are the deepest parts of
the ocean, and the lowest points on Earth, reaching depths of nearly 7 mi (10 km) below sea level.
http://education.nationalgeographic.com/encyclopedia/ocean-trench/
http://www.srh.noaa.gov/jetstream/ocean/layers_ocean.htm
Just as the atmosphere is divided into layers the ocean consists of several layers itself.
They are defined as Zones.

Epipelagic
Zone
Epipelagic Zone
This surface layer is also called the sunlight zone and extends from the surface to
660 feet (200 meters). It is in this zone that most of the visible light exists.
http://www.srh.noaa.gov/jetstream/ocean/layers_ocean.htm
With the light comes heating from sun. This heating is responsible for wide changes
in temperature that occur in this zone, both in the latitude and each season. The sea
surface temperatures range from as high as 97°F (36°C) in the Persian Gulf to 28°F
(-2°C) near the north pole.
The sea surface temperature also "follows the sun". From the earth' s perspective, the
sun's position in the sky moves higher each day from winter to summer and lower
each day from summer to winter. This change in the sun's position from winter to
summer means that more energy is reaching the ocean and therefore warms the water.

Epipelagic Zone
Following are several loops over various periods showing the north-south migration
of temperature each month:
1998 (1.3 mb) | 1996-98 (3.8 mb) | 1993-98 (7.7 mb)
Interaction with the wind keeps this layer mixed and thus allows the heating from the
sun to be distributed vertically. At the base of this mixing layer is the beginning of
the thermocline. The thermocline is a region where water temperature decreases
rapidly with increasing depth and transition layer between the mixed layer at the
surface and deeper water.
Epipelagic
Zone
Mesopelagic
Zone
The depth and strength of the thermocline varies from season to season and year to
year. It is strongest in the tropics and decreases to non-existent in the polar winter
season.
Mesopelagic Zone
Below the epipelagic zone is the mesopelagic zone, extending from 660 feet (200
meters) to 3,300 feet (1,000 meters). The mesopelagic zone is sometimes referred
to as the twilight zone or the midwater zone as sunlight this deep is very faint.
Temperature changes the greatest in this zone as this is the zone which contains
the thermocline.
Because of the lack of light, it is within this zone that bioluminescence begins to
appear on life. The eyes on the fishes are larger and generally upward directed, most
likely to see silhouettes of other animals (for food) against the dim light.

Bathypelagic Zone
The depths from 3,300 - 13,100 feet (1,000-4,000 meters) comprise the bathypelagic
zone. Due to its constant darkness, this zone is also called the midnight zone.
The only light at this depth (and lower) comes from the bioluminescence of the
animals themselves.
The temperature in the bathypelagic zone, unlike that of the mesopelagic zone, is
constant. The temperature never fluctuates far from a chilling 39°F (4°C). The
pressure in the bathypelagic zone is extreme and at depths of 13,100 feet
(4,000 meters), reaches over 5850 pounds per square inch!
Yet, sperm whales can dive down to this level in search of food.
Abyssopelagic Zone
The Abyssopelagic Zone (or abyssal zone) extends from 13,100 feet (4,000 meters)
to 19,700 feet (6,000 meters).
It is the pitch-black bottom layer of the ocean. The name (abyss) comes from a Greek
word meaning "no bottom"because they thought the ocean was bottomless. A full
three-quarters of the area of the deep-ocean floor lies in this zone. The water
temperature is constantly near freezing and only a few creatures can be found at
these crushing depths. The deepest a fish has ever been found was in the Puerto
Rico Trench at 27,460 feet (8,372 meters).
Hadalpelagic Zone (Hadal Zone)
Hadal
Zone
The deepest zone of the ocean, the hadalpelagic zone, extends from 19,700 feet
(6,000 meters) to the very bottom at 35,797 feet (10,911 meters) in the Mariana
Trench off the coast of Japan. The temperature is constant at just above freezing.
The weight of all the water over head in the Mariana Trench is over 8 tons per
square inch. (the weight of 48 Boeing 747 jets).
Even at the very bottom life exists. In 2005, tiny single-celled organisms, called
foraminifera, a type of plankton, were discovered in the Challenger Deep Trench
just southwest of Guam in the Pacific Ocean.

Ocean Voyager Fun Facts
Whale sharks in the Ocean Voyager in Atlanta, Georgia can grow up to be 25 to 35 feet in length.
It took 1.8 million ponds of sea salt to make the Ocean Voyager exhibit as salty as the ocean.
The 6.3 million gallons of water in the Ocean Voyager can be filtered in 60 minutes.
The pipes that filter the water in the Ocean Voyager exhibit stretch 61 miles,
or the length of highway I-285 around Atlanta.
