L5: mRNA to Amino Acids Outline

In this lesson you will learn how to
  interpret
a codon
  determine the amino acid the codon represents
  transcribe a DNA chain to mRNA
  translated a mRNA chain to amino acids
L5: mRNA to Amino Acids
  How
to read a codon and interpret the amino acid
it represents.

  Use
the following table to determine which amino
acid this represents.
L5 The key tool in this lesson is the
Table of mRNA codons below

How to read the mRNA codon table
  A
codon contains three bases.
  Locate the 1st codon on the left, the 2nd codon on
top, and the 3rd on the right.
  When the correct three base codon is located the
amino acid it codes for is identified in the box.
  Amino acids are repeated many times in the table
as there are 64 possible codons and only 20
different amino acids.
Practice Problems

Use Fig 4.8, page 119 in your text to find the amino acid coded for by the following
codons
CGA
1.  Argenine
2.  UGA
2. Stop
3.  AAG
3. Lysine

use the Genetic Code table to identify which
amino acids are going to be sequenced from the above
mRNA strand (Fig 4.8, page 119)
  Answer
 UAC= Tyrosine
 ACU=Threonine
 CGU= Arginine
 AUC= Isoleucine
 CUA= Leucine
