W12.00 Static Electricity Worksheet 1. How much force do two 1C charges exert on each other when they are 1 m apart? 2. A 1µC charge and a ‐4µC charge are 10 meters apart. How much force does the 1µC charge exert on the ‐4µC charge? How much does the ‐4µC charge exert on the 1µC charge? 3. A 1µC charge and a 4µC charge are 12 meters apart. Where on the straight line connecting them can a ‐1µC charge be placed and have no net force exerted on it? Where can a +3µC charge be placed and have no net force acting on it? 4. A 3µC charge and a ‐15MC charge are placed 18 meters apart. Where along the straight line connecting them (and extending beyond them in both directions) can a 1µC charge be placed so that it is in equilibrium? 5. Show that a N/C is the same thing as a V/m. 6. An electron is in a constant field of 2000 V/m. What is the force on the electron? What is its acceleration? (You will have to look up mass and charge data about an electron.) 7. What is the electric field 2 meters from an isolated 2µC charge? What is the potential at that point? 8. What is the magnitude of an electric field halfway between a 3µC charge and a ‐ 1µC charge separated by 2 meters? Which way does it point? What is the potential (voltage) there? 9. Two 1µC charges are located 0.5 meters apart. What is the magnitude of the electric field 1 meter to the right of one of the charges and along a straight line connecting them? What is the potential at that point? 10. What is the magnitude of an electric field between two plates 4 meters apart if they are 1000 volts different in potential? How much force would that field exert on a 1µC charge? 11. A ‐2µC charge experiences a force of 30 N to the right. What is the strength of the electric field on the charge? How far apart would two plates charge to 500 Volts difference have to be to produce that field? 12. How much energy does a 1µC charge gain if it is accelerated across 2000 Volts? What speed would it attain if its mass were 0.001 kg? 13. A 5µC charge is accelerated until it has an energy of 35µJ. What potential difference was used to accelerate it?
