Epithelial Cells – Also known as “Skin Cells”
Epithelia are tissue cells formed that line the cavities in the body and also cover flat surfaces.
For example, outer skin covering, lining of the stomach, lining of the liver, lining of the kidneys,
and even lining of the uterus. The epithelia cells are the most abundant tissue in the body.
Epithelia are the barrier between the outside world’s contaminants and the body. These cells
replicate often to replace damaged or dead cells. Many layers provide better protection,
meaning if one layer is lost, the underlying tissue is still protected.
Questions:
1. What are Epithelial Cells?
2. How does the shape of the epithelial cell aid in creating a barrier of protection in the
body?
3. How does the epithelium aid to maintain homeostasis?
4. Which body system do epithelial cells most likely work with the majority of the time?
